Warning: V20 Software versions and Connection Clients cause "Excess Usage QTL charges"

Background:

We have denied access to products for which we do not have a Select license and have set warnings for all licensed products in entitlement/license management.

Nevertheless we received significant Excess Usage QTL invoices for Q3/21 and Q1/22 for products we do not own a license and have seen overusage for licensed products without receiving a warning or the user getting the Access denied message box.

We could pinpoint the problem to some old V20 (OpenRail, ProConcrete, Plaxis, ...) software versions with the matching Connection client. These installations ignored configured Default Access = Denied and Warning settings but logged the usage which in consequence triggered an excess usage charge.

After a lengthy discussion with Bentley and demonstrating that the fault is with the Bentley licensing/logging component, the invoices were cancelled.

So: I suggest

* you check if you have software with the broken licensing part still running. (A requirement for the cancellation was our commitment to stop using the problematic versions going forward) and upgrade asap
and
* check your past invoices for potential errors (Crossreference your excess usage reports with the detailed user/machine/alert logs) and request a correction.
