So I saw this thread:
https://communities.bentley.com/communities/other_communities/licensing_cloud_and_web_services/f/forum/229320/what-is-going-on-with-the-connection-client-is-there-a-conflict-with-a-recent-windows10-update-or-what
It appears that an optional update caused Bentley to use 100% of a user's CPU. Fixed by uninstalling and avoiding that optional update. However, a new update, KB5013942, is not optional and appears to contain the same things from the optional update that caused Bentley to brick computers.
This seems like a MASSIVE issue. I think the update just came out yesterday or today but it has the potential to leave every computer on our network crippled if our users unsuspectingly install this Windows update. Is Bentley working on a solution to this? Seems huge. The issue isn't Windows updates. They aren't going to revise their updates to be compatible with Bentley Connect Client. I'm assuming the client will need to be repaired.
KB5013942, which is mentioned in a comment inside the post cited, is a rollup including KB5011831. Both fail to install on my 21H2 version of w10. It also says that support has ended for windows versions cited which may align with what you may have. So, update windows and remove either one if installed; that should solve this.
Electronics can be turned into bricks but bricks are always bricks (or shards thereof).
Bill
Hi Bill,
I am an IT technician at a company. I can't install the problem update and uninstall it from 100+ machines. That would be a major time investment. Not to mention the time i would be taking from the 100+ employees. Unfortunately, this is not a viable solution for me.
My point was you should be on a supported version of Windwoes (bold, no less) which will block the problem KBs. My test bore that out. I'm also IT and supporting hundreds of computers. I suggest you test it as well. If you have that many machines, you should be using automation to support them or some nightmare pain in some form is headed your way at some point..
I'm still getting to all the comments and may find some satisfaction here, but 'if Wndows Updates cause problems, make sure you're running Windows Updates' is not a response that adds to the conversation in my opinion. I have machines that are fresh installs with all updates from Microsoft run that have this problem. This was one of many examples of 'here's something that may help, so I'm going to imply that you're doing something terrible and causing this yourself'.It's reasonable to expect we won't have all the latest security fixes if we don't run updates, but updates have caused vast and expensive problems countless times. It's not reasonable to demand everyone always be fully up to date. Even if it were, in this case, it does not solve the problem. I have now probably dozens of Windows Updates that are marked for uninstall in WSUS because I've been able to confirm they leave my users totally non-functional. Today is the first day I've had this problem where Microsoft 100% will not allow me to remove the update. This is a Microsoft problem, possibly with some share of blame for Bentley. This is not something PL caused.
