Client licensing issue

I have a client that purchased StormCAD in 2015 and they have it installed on a legacy computer for some old projects. It's a Windows 7 machine. They had been able to use StormCAD until a few weeks ago when they loaded a project and it said the licensing file was missing.

Looking at the apps on the computer, StormCAD is running version 05.06.012.00 SP2 and was installed in September 2018.

StormCAD V8i (SELECTseries 5) version is 08.11.05.113 and was installed in March of this year.

The CONNECTION client is 10.0.4.17 and was installed the same day as V8i.

We are wondering if the software is no longer supported and they need to look at upgrading or if there is a reason the computer can't get its license from the server. Nothing has changed on the host computer or the server that I am aware of. There shouldn't be any issues with the host communicating with the server.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi Daniel,

StormCAD 05.06.012.00 is from 2005 and can be configured to either use legacy Haestad licensing, or use Bentley SELECTserver licensing.

StormCAD 08.11.05.113 is from 2016 and only uses Bentley SELECTServer licensing.

Neither version is supported per the Support Policy and neither version uses the CONNECTION Client (SES) for licensing. However, that does not mean the license should no longer work. We do strongly recommend upgrading not only because of the Support Policy but because Windows 7 may pose a security risk for you since Microsoft no longer supports it. If your organization has a SELECT subscription, upgrading can be done with no additional cost. See more here: Downloading OpenFlows Software

We have added a lot of helpful functionality over the years, which you can read about here: New Features and Enhancements for OpenFlows products

If you are not able to upgrade, we can try to assist with troubleshooting the license issue but we'll need a bit more information. For example the wording or a screenshot of the error, whether or not you have SELECT. Non-SELECT users will need to check out a license (See Non-SELECT section of this article) and if the license is "stuck", we may need to manually check it in from our side. A screenshot of the License Management Tool may help here (please be sure not to include your activation key on this public forum).

  • Jesse,

I am Daniel's client.  We have not pursued this over the past year as we really didn't need access to the legacy data and product.  We are at the point where it would be helpful, again. I have talked to support, and they will not talk to me without a support agreement.  They told me to submit a support ticket.  When I go online to submit a support ticket, I get errors and notes that say I am not authorized.  So, I can't get telephone support or email support just to be able to activate a license that should not have been deactivated.  Sales would love to sell me a new licensed product, but the interest there is not selling me a support agreement, they want to sell me a new product.  However, at this stage if this is the support I get for an existing license, why in the world would I buy an updated one?

  • Hi Brian, it appears that your account is orphaned - not associated with a company. This would explain why you were unable to create a Service Request. A Bentley specialist here can assist with this or can open a Service Request on your behalf and contact you if needed.

I also see that your organization does not have a subscription with us, but I do see the perpetual license for StormCAD and FlowMaster. If the problem is with using a V8i version (using SELECTServer licensing), the license may not be working due to lack of machine registration. Please try following the steps in the following article:

    Machine Registration for non-SELECT accounts

If the problem is with StormCAD 5.6, we do not support this version or the Haestad Methods legacy licensing that it uses (and it is not supported on any operating system that Microsoft still supports).

  • The issue is with the StormCAD 5.6.  The V8 was a trial install and was not a purchase.  We run this on a non-networked version of Windows 7 and that computer only exists to run StormCAD.  It is only connected to the network if it is required.  If you are telling me that we are no longer able to keep that software running with the license we have, then I guess it is not perpetual, but does have a limit and we have reached that limit.  We are not looking for support using the product or upgrade it.  We just want to be able to use the product purchased to be able to review old files.

  • (I have connected with Brian offline regarding this)
