I just upgraded my SELECTserver to 8.11.7.35. I am trying to set up client access restrictions based upon machine name and it will not allow access. Using IP address works in my test environment but machine name does not. I cannot use IP addresses in my environment since I do not control the IP addresses of the computers that will be accessing the site. I have tried every combination of syntax I can think of, with and without quotes surrounding the name, and nothing works.
Funny how wildcards will not be accepted in the machine name either but the details area clearly states that it will. I immediately get a red pop up beneath the machine name that claims !@#$%^&*( ) < > can not be used in computer name field. See the asterisk in that list? Is there some other character that is supposed to work for the wildcard? I know the question mark is a single character substitute but that is not the wildcard I need.
I've tried to get this to work with several past versions of SSXM and this has never worked for me. I have even set up Custom Activation Groups to see if those would work and they have the same problem.
Please help!
Kristi
Sorry for the delay on the response, I didn't get an email showing you had responded!
We are using pre-XM clients. How do I format the name of the gateway into the machine name for the client computer? Let's just say my server running SSXM and the Gateway is named Fred. The computer trying to get a license from that server is named Wilma. What do I put into the Computer Name field in SSXM? Fred\Wilma? That doesn't seem to work either. I am only trying to restrict access by computer name, not by domain.
It is confusing with the * for wildcards - it is noted that wildcards are supported in the Computer Name field. I was not trying to use this to define use by domain, only by computer name. I assume the wildcard is to be used for things like: I have 100 desktop computers and they are named Computer1, Computer2, Computer3, etc. and I have 50 laptops named Laptop1, Laptop2, etc. I can specify all desktop computers get access by using Computer* in the Computer Name field. But that does not seem to work that way.
The wildcard thing is really just gravy. I really need to get the Computer Name part working.
Thanks Phil!
Hi Kristi,
Are you using pre-XM clients through the Gateway or are the client applications all XM or V8i? If they are pre-XM, you must include the name of the machine where the Gateway is running. If they are all XM or V8i clients, what is the error message you receive on the client end? There is a log file that is created when you run the "send logs now" from the license management tool that would help me see what response is coming back from SELECTserver. After you run the send logs now, the log file will be under C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Bentley\Licensing\licdebug.log. I don't recommend posting the log file to the forum as it may contain sensitive information. If you want, you can send me a private message through BE Communties and I will take a look at the log.
As far as the * not working for the wildcard when defining a group of computers by domain, it is an understood *. You do not have to enter the wildcard, only the domain name. It will automatically fill in the * when you apply the restriction by group of computers. When defining computers by a single computer, the * would not be necessary unless your computer name actually includes a * character in the computer name.

Phil
