Still having problems with Academic product license

A few days ago, I had made a post about the Bentlley Licensing not working on a locally installed copy of Microstation. Here is a brief recap of the discussion:

(1) I have a dual booting system with Win XP and Linux installed. I usually use Linux but for some research work, I need to use Bentley Microstation and Bentley Map.

(2) So, I contact my local system admin and he gave me the DVDs alongwith the site activation code and SELECT Server.

(3) I installed Microstation and Bentley Map on my machine and I activate it using the the information given. It is to be noted here that the products in question are from SelectSeries 2. (apparently a "lesser" version)

(4) Microstation surprisingly was running in a trial mode! And lo and behold, 30 days later my Microstation does not even go past the "Activate" process.

(5) Thus the so called "experts" at Bentley recommended SelectSeries 3. I used my institute-id to log in and create an account and finally download Bentley Microstation (did it today morning). Uninstalled the older version and installed the new one! (Hope there is nothing wrong here!).

(6) The "StudentServer" site has some "ACTIVATION CODE". I copied that. And pasted the code to the site activation process. "TEST CONNECTION"... Local site does not accept the code. I went "Back" and chose the "Bentley Server" and the new code. I enter proxy details... Ohh no! It can't connect. I re-enter the old site codes. Code is accepted. I select "India" and then finally click "Close" ... after no other option is available. OHHHH NOO! Microstation still does not start.

Bentley people... you have made a very NICE product. Now what do I do?

  • This and other threads related to the same topic from you have meandered all over the place, which is not really helping getting to the actual root cause of the problem and therefore not helping you. So, could you please do the following:

On the computer experiencing this issue, can you access the local License Management Tool (you can do a Windows search -- Start > Search > Files and Folders > Files and Folders and then enter in the search field: licensetool.exe). Start the License Management Tool, select the "Tools" dropdown, and then "Send logs now". Can you then activate the product(s)? If not, can you then locate and attach a copy of the licdebug.log -- information on how to do that is found on Inserting and Attaching images, videos, or files to posts. The default location may be one of the following depending on the OS:

    • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Bentley\Licensing
    • C:\ProgramData\Bentley\Licensing local user\appdata\bentley\licensing
    • C:\Users\<username>\appdata\local\bentley\licensing

I realize that you may have done some of this before, but I ask that you do this one more time in the order identified above. That may help us help you get this sorted out.

    1. There is not one computer experiencing this issue, but a whole laboratory. In fact, owing to this problem existing in the s/w, a whole course of post-graduate students is suffering

I have done all the steps mentioned as above and on those mentioned on various Bentley Licensing related pages I found on the internet. But to no avail. The trial version note does not go away.

I sent you the file separately.

  • Thank you for staying focused on this specific issue... we are looking into the information you have provided.

  • It turns out that I am able to use the activation key from StudentServer to "Check Out" the license from selectserver.bentley.com, but my locally installed SelectServer is not able to cater to the license. Please see the attached file for the screenshot.

    What could be the problem?

  • Yup, the problem was with the logs. Bentley SELECTServer HAS TO send the logs, otherwise it would not let the client pool the licenses.
