Is a new License file needed when SelectServer is updated?

We are currently using SelectServer XM. Apparently, the newer versions offer much better reports, so I would like to upgrade my SelectServer to the current version.

  1. Will it still recognize the existing license?
  2. Is there a quick guide on what steps I need to follow to upgrade the SelectServer?

TIA

  • Upgrade information isin the link below. Your older version of the SELECTserver works from a serial number and activation key which inturn allows you to download your licensing information into the database. You do not need a secific new license. You will need to use your current serial numebr and activation key. That information is stll valid. Because you are upgrading the information will be intact from your registry and I see no need for you to have to manually enter the information at all. It should auto populate during the upgrade.

  • We are running version 8.9.3.48. It is running on a domain controller.

Do you know if that was supposed to be supported on that version or not?

If it was supported, what was the last version that still supported running on a domain controller.

  • The 08.09.03.48 version of SELECTserver has been out of development for at least 5 releases of the SELECTServer application. Unlike our engineering software when a new version of SELECTserver is released the older versions are removed from the download sites and production. Modifications and adjustments are maintained in the "newer releases" The reasoning being that any adjustments or modifications the application are made in the current release. For instance the database delivered with the 08.09.03.48 version is a Microsoft MSDE database that was associated with the Microsoft SQL 2000 build. That build is no longer supported by Microsoft. The logical step for the SELECTServer application is to move forward to the updated Microsoft SQL databases. Moving on to answer your
    question directly.

The 08.09.03.48 SELECTserver was supported on Domain Controller.
The 08.11.XX.XX was the last versions that would run on a Domain Controller.
Neither version is available for download.
The 09.00.xx.xx version are "NOT" supported on a Domain Controller

    INFORMATION:

This change was made because the SELECTserver application works internally off oflocal accounts connected to ASPNET and IIS. The first thing a Domain Controller does is removes the local accounts crippling the application. Of course Microsoft has ways that you can reconfigure to achieve some functionality but
they are Microsoft directions and administration not Bentley Systems’ and the process increased the difficulty of configuring and running the application
successfully. The decision was made moving forward in the development of the application to drop support of the SELECTserver application on domain
controllers. I would recommend that you install the application on a supported operating system or take advantage of the HOSTED option where the
responsibilities of the configuration becomes that of the Bentley Systems IT department.

FWIW - we've been very happy with the Bentley hosted SS option.  Occasionally a user will freak out when some internet communication fails and they get the message saying they have 29 days left to use the product, but if you just continue, use the product, you can go into the license management and "Send logs now", which clears things up.  Keeps you up to date w/ little or no fuss.

  • When trying to analyze usage, I am having trouble counting one users usage as 1 usage. If they exit one program before opening another, I get 1 usage. But if they open a second session of the same or a different version, I get 2 usages.

I'm using Excel and cannot figure out the test or formula needed to get a true count.
