How does this dovetail with the contractual provision allowing usage of prior/different versionsof the software as a benefit of SELECT?Per Greg’s 2017 Year in Infrastructure announcement, we have already announced that Bentley Systems’ technical support for pre-V8i versions of applications will end on January 1, 2019 (see the Update on Bentley Application Support Policies for more detail.) The MS/J announcement is in line with those plans. We are prepared to continue MS/J support at a premium fee.
Any risk that accounts using both MicroStation/J and newer versions of MicroStation will avoid the newer versions to stay under the radar in terms of how many licenses they own?Yes, this is a recognized risk.
Will this change add any extra SELECT fees?No additional SELECT fees will be applied
Do we know why users are not upgrading to newer versions of plant design software? There are two main reasons. The primary reason is due to contractual obligations (i.e.: something needs to be delivered in PDS). The second reason is generational/habit, they won’t work with anything but their existing familiar software (why learn something new now).
Can we also negotiate a Success Plan instead of a product upgrade? When it comes to organizations where there is a large volume of usage we can make exceptions and handle on a case by case basis.
The letter that went out has some language about continuing to "support" MS/J. Can you clarify this to dispel the myth that we will update it for current operating systems? While we will continue to support MS/J that does not mean we will continue to update it for every new operating system that comes out. Alternatives can be provided, but that might result in a VM of a previous operating system.
How will we address usage of MS/J under an ELS?Effective April 1, 2018
How will we address usage of MS/J under SELECT?Effective April 1, 2018
Will reporting visibility be available both internal and to the subscriber that will distinguish their J utilization versus all other MicroStation versions tied to the Term Licensing billing amount? Not in the short term, we are in the early days of making the systematic changes for this. The goal is to make this as visible as possible in the future.
Who to contact for user inquiries:
If user installed both MSJ and MS V8i on a same machine, and run them both, will this be counted as two usages?Yes, for ELS users, if MicroStation/J and MicroStation V8I are run on a client machine on the same day, this will count as two uses. For SELECT users, two uses would be counted if both are running within the same 10-minute period.
Will the SELECTserver be updated to apply the new counting rules? How to check the usage on hosted SELECTserver, which report should user run? For deployed users, SS is not updated anymore, how to apply this rule? Will the monthly logs include version info as well? If user want to check/compare report from their own, how to do this? There is work being done in the background to figure out ways to be able to adequately report upon this, to give some visibility into the usage of MSJ versus other versions.
Will MS 95 Se users also get a similar mail? Will the new commercial model apply to the preMS/J user?MS/J is the only product being segregated out to a new product ID. It is the oldest version of MicroStation that can report usage. That being said, users accessing versions older than MS/J will not be receiving a similar email.
