This support solution provides step-by-step instructions for migrating from a deployed SELECTserver running in-house to Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices (i.e. the hosted server or SELECTserver OnLine) on Microsoft's Azure cloud platform.

Background

When migrating to SELECT Open Access or renewing a SELECT agreement, all subscribers must migrate to Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices, provisioned through Microsoft’s powerful new Azure cloud platform for maximum performance, security, and simplified administration, leveraging existing Windows desktop directory services for identity management.

The following outlines steps required to complete this transition.

Steps to Accomplish

Step 1:  Contact Bentley Licensing Support to request a server configuration change.

Note: If Bentley Licensing Support has already completed the migration and provided a confirmation email with the new license settings, please skip this step and proceed to Step 3.

  1. File a Service Request by clicking here.
  2. A Bentley Licensing analyst will convert your license and contact you once your license is available on Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices.

Step 2:  Transmit Usage Logs from an existing deployed SELECTserver.

  1. Access the SELECTserver Administration Page from the host machine running SELECTserver (From the Start menu, choose Program Files > Bentley > SELECTserver > Bentley SELECTserver Administration Site) or (http://servername/bss/admin), replacing servername with the name of your SELECTserver.
  2. On the administration site, select the “Administration” tab > Click “Manage Services”.
  3. There are two SELECTserver tasks of concern (Usage Log Processing and Usage Log Posting) which will need to be completed in this order. Using the associated "RUN NOW" soft button to the right of each service task run the Usage Log Processing task.

The STATE of the task will change from "IDLE -yellow" to "RUNNING -green". Allow the task to complete its processing. Refresh the page every 60 seconds or so until the status changes back to "IDLE -yellow" indicating it is done.
  4. Click “Run Now” for Usage Log Posting. Upon completion of running both tasks, the "Last Run Results" should read "Success"

Step 3:  Receive and update client machines with new server name

  1. Once you receive confirmation your licensing is available on Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices with the new activation information, the server name on all client machines and server based products must be updated to reflect the license host selectserver.bentley.com.
  2. On the client machine running Bentley software, Open License Management Tool.

Go to the Windows Start Menu > All Programs > Your Bentley Program > License Management Tool.

    -OR-

Open Windows Explorer > Search under All Files and Folders for “licensetool.exe” > double click on the icon to open License Management Tool.
  3. Within the License Management Tool go to “Tools” > “Options”.
  4. In the box “Server Name” enter “selectserver.bentley.com”. The site activation key will remain unchanged.
  5. Select “Test Connection” to confirm that the SELECTserver and activation key “verified”.

* You can use Group Policy to bulk configure product activation Configure Product Activation using Group Policy.

Step 4:  Stop the Deployed SELECTserver service

  1. From the host machine running SELECTserver access the Control Panel (From the Start menu, choose Settings > Control Panel.)
  2. Double-click the Administrative Tools icon.

  3. Double-click the Services icon.

  4. Highlight the Bentley SELECTserver service and choose to Stop the service.

*You will need to keep the SELECTserver Gateway service running if any client machines require legacy version (Pre-XM) software access. Just reconfigure it to use SELECTserver OnLine by performing the following steps:

  1. Select from the Windows Start menu:
All Programs -> Bentley -> SELECTserver -> License Management Tool
  2. Select Options from the Tools menu.
  3. Change the server name to:
    selectserver.bentley.com
  4. Click OK, and close the License Management Tool.
  5. Restart the Bentley SELECTserver Gateway service.

If decommissioning the entire server, a standalone version of the SELECTserver Gateway can be installed on another server or even directly on workstations as an alternative. The following support solution provides instructions for downloading, installing, and configuring a standalone Gateway.
