How do I configure Client Access Restrictions for products using the Gateway?

This support solution shows how to configure Client Access Restrictions on Bentley's hosted SELECTserver to permit use of older Bentley products that use the SELECTserver Gateway.

Background

Bentley's hosted SELECTserver has the ability to restrict access to the license server based on an IP address for security reasons. The public IP address (i.e. IP address of the router) of any authorized locations is added to the Client Access Restrictions page. However, these rules alone will not permit access to pre-XM versions of Bentley products which utilize the SELECTserver Gateway.

Client Access Restrictions are encoded in a local license file maintained by each SELECTserver Gateway. When an incoming license request reaches the Gateway, the local IP address of the requesting workstation is compared against this list. Consequently, local IP addresses for any authorized workstations must be added to the Client Access Restrictions page on SELECTserver. While they will never be used on the hosted SELECTserver, they will be utilized by any SELECTserver Gateway.

Steps to Accomplish

  1. Note the local IP addresses of any workstations that use pre-XM versions of Bentley products.
  2. Also note the public IP addresses of any servers with a SELECTserver Gateway.
  3. Access the Client Access Restrictions page on the SELECTserver administration site.
  4. Ensure that Client Access Restrictions are enabled.
  5. Add rules for any local and public IP addresses found in the first two steps. For local IP addresses, an address range may be preferable if several machines will be permitted access.
  6. Click the red circle next to any new rules to enable them.
  7. Restart the Bentley SELECTserver Gateway service on any servers with a SELECTserver Gateway. This will regenerate a new local license file with the updated Client Access Restrictions.
