Introduced in September 2008, SELECT Server version 08.11.01.64 has elevated this important product to a higher level of functionality and ease for monitoring client-side licensing, allowing the most efficient use of computer-aided design software. With traditional features such as Client Access Restrictions, Usage Reports, and License Management to new features such as Custom Activation Groups, Reports by Custom Activation Groups, and Time Zone Settings per Site, SELECT Server offers much more comprehensive features in the 08.11 series.

Along with the newly added features of SELECT Server, there are, however, some common questions have arisen, and this article provides the answers to them. The SELECT Server 08.11 installation, while similar to the previous SELECT Server XM installation, is more robust, and requires additional attention. Understanding how to troubleshoot the additional requirements will alleviate the anxiety of installation while maintaining the excitement of transitioning to the next generation of SELECT Server; whether you are upgrading from SELECT Server V8 2004, SELECT Server XM, converting from the Bentley Hosted SELECT Server to a Deployed SELECT Server, or installing SELECT Server for the first time as a new Bentley Systems user.

1. What causes the error message “There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vender (1603)”?

This error is common when installing SELECT Server Version 08.11. If you receive this error message and choose to ignore it, the outcome will display this error near the end and roll back the process. As a result, the best thing to do once this error occurs is to cancel, leave the SELECT Server installation, and do the following:

1) From a command prompt CHANGE DIRECTORY to   C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727

2) Run the command aspnet_regiis –i  (This registers the ASPNET app with the Internet Information Services (IIS).)

3) From the command prompt, enter IISRESET.
Once this command is entered into the specified directory, the installation will complete without error.

2. What causes the error message “Exception occurred starting the logger: …?

This is another error that might be displayed during the installation of SELECT Server. If any previous versions of SELECT Server have not been uninstalled prior to the installation of 08.11, you will receive the following error this error message. This error occurs during the configuration of the SSCMD.exe.

If you receive this error, double-check that all older versions of SELECT Server have been uninstalled. If any older versions of SELECT Server are installed, cancel the installation, uninstall, and then proceed with the SELECT Server 08.11.01.64 installation.

3. What causes the error message “The service started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do…”?

If this message appears, ensure you have uninstalled all older versions of SELECT Server or SELECT Server Gateway. Once verified, if the message persists, clear the Event Viewer Application Log on your system and try restarting your Bentley services.

4. What causes this repeated message in the Message Center of the SELECT Server Administration Site? “An error occurred while updating the records in the database.”

This message relates to the Data Update Service.

By design, SELECT Server tries to post its usage logs to Bentley once per day. If it cannot post the usage logs for any reason, a message is written to the Message Center and SELECT Server will attempt to post the usage logs again the next day. This process will repeat until a successful connection to Bentley is made or until 30 days has passed. If SELECT Server cannot connect to Bentley within 30 days, there may be a greater problem and the SELECT Server logs will need to be examined.

Bentley servers are active and busy, and sometimes a SELECT Server may not be able to connect to them at any given time. This is normal and should not cause a concern. In most cases, the Bentley Sever is able to process the logs. Examining the Manage Services page within SELECT Server Administration site allows you to see the true last run result of the SELECT Server task, with a display status of Success, Warning, or Failure per task. The SELECT Server tasks will attempt to connect three times in a given session before recessing until the following night to reconnect to the Bentley Server. At that time a message will appear in the Message Center if any tasks fail on any attempt.

While the Message Center displays failure, a notification is not published upon a successful transmission. To confirm the task was successful, double-check the Manage Services page to verify the status of the task. If the Data Update Service is failing periodically but not every night, there is no need to be overly concerned unless the service is failing three or four nights in a row.  After three or four nights of consecutive failures, a conclusive true failure is in effect. There could be a network communication concern, and further investigating should commence with your network administrator.
