Importing Road Place Maps into MicroStation V8i(SELECTseries3)

Hello,

I am fairly new to MicroStation, and can not figure out how to simply import a place map with roads being into the design.

Embarrassingly enough, I currently attach a raster of the map I need, and literally trace it.

I feel what I'm searching for has to be quite a simple answer, for AutoCAD it was a very simple process for us; type in the electric/gas map number and press  "Insert Maps" and the maps would appear.

How do I import place maps so I can actively design on top of the existing road? (Very few people in my company use MicroStation, and the person who had my job prior to me left with no notice so I am unable to ask him, however I know he was importing place maps.)

Thank you in advance, and have a great day!

  • Where are these "maps" coming from? What format are these maps? Are they stored on a network or out on the internet? SHPs, TIFFs, DWGs, PDFs, WMS?

You can attach a number of different file types as reference files or raster attachments. But you have to know where the file is and what type of file it is so you can tell the software what to do.
Just to let you know - SS3 is several years old. It's possible the technology you speak of didn't even exist back then.

And are you sure that your company doesn't have some custom AutoCAD tool or preference to take all of the "work" out of attaching a map? There may be commands going on behind the scenes when you click that button. There may be preferences set up, external servers mapped, or even a custom tool with a path hardcoded into it. Out of the box, MicroStation doesn't provide cutsom tools - those have to be developed in your office to meet your needs.

  • if you know that "he" was can you find an old microstation dgn file you know this was done to, then look at the ref manager and see the name and path they  come from...

Now go to acad and see  how its done there, this is a customisation in acad not out of the box...

Ask your ACAD it manager  how is acad doing  it?

Once you / we know that  I  can help you write a script to at least get you part way...

PM me if you like and I can take you through some ideas that might work...
