MicroStation Basics for Civil Designers - Chapter 5: Additional Drawing Tools

A “design” is a complex entity consisting of much more than just lines. MicroStation contains a wide variety of element placement tools ranging from circles and arcs to various types of polygons, points, complex curves, and more. All are equally important, allowing us to combine these different types of “simple” elements to create complex designs.

Just as a master carpenter benefits from having a comprehensive set of tools at his or her disposal, so you will benefit by broadening your knowledge of the various element placement tools found in MicroStation. A tool fit for the job is better than trying to force a tool to fill a role it is not meant for.

This video is an introduction to this video series. You will learn how to further enhance your drawing skills by mastering the use of some of these additional types of drawing tools. In this video series you will learn to create standard details that will then be included in a detail sheet(s) as a part of the construction document set for our site design project.

Part 1: The Proposed Building Development of the site design project continues. The location of the proposed building on the site needs to be determined so that the design of the parking lot and sidewalk layouts can proceed. In this video you will draw the building pad on the proposed site plan.

Part 2: The Metro Recreational Property The proposed site development project will also contain a Class 4C Metro Recreational Property (to be developed at a future date). The site must be further subdivided to include this public recreation area. You will achieve this in this video.

Part 3: Create a Manhole Detail Standard details are an important part of any design project. They provide specifications and guidelines for aspects of a construction project where little or no change takes place from one instance to another. In this video you will begin creating a manhole frame and cover detail, adding this to an existing set of standard details.

Part 4: Completing the Manhole Detail In the previous video, construction of a manhole detail began. New tools and snaps were introduced to assist in creating this geometry accurately and efficiently. In this video you will learn several new placement and manipulation commands to help complete the manhole frame and cover detail.

Part 5: Bollard Detail A bollard is a visual barrier, often in the form of a short post, used to direct and control traffic. A bollard detail is needed to define installation specifications for bollards used in the project. In this video you will create a bollard detail, adding this to an existing set of standard details.
