Slow Undo Command

I have tried searching for a solution to this issue, but there are a lot of unanswered threads all over the Bentley Communities. Whenever I use Undo or Ctrl+Z, it takes anywhere from 10-30 seconds to complete the undo, even for undoing a simple line. The other odd thing is its here one day and gone the next. Most of the time I can fix it by just restarting my computer, but not today.

This currently happening in my SS2 installation. I also have SS4 installed, so this is the most up to date version of Microstation and Geopak we have for the FDOT workspace. I have tried deleting my Geopak Resource files since that seems to be a solution to many issues, but that did not fix the issue. Some of the other threads suggest deleting the upf file, but users who have done this report that it fixes it for a while, but then the issue returns.

This has been happening to me for a while now and I have a feeling this is some sort of network issue. I use a workstation install of FDOTSS2 and not a network install, so that should help the issue.

I have been working today and this issue has been occurring in my RDXSRD01 file, thought it has occurred in other files on other projects in the past. When I went into my DSGNRD01 file, my Undo was working just fine. So it looks like i narrowed it down to a file issue. Is there anything I can do to the file to possibly resolve this issue?

Has anyone experienced this issue and found a solution?

Thanks

  • I have been working with SS4 in a file that has very little civil geometry in it. Yesterday it started having the slow undo problem you desribe. Today it did not. This has me wondering if it is a server/network issue. Have you tried working with the files on your hard drive?
  • Mike, i just ran into the issue again in my QTDSRDS01 file while doing quantities. Still in SS2. Not much in there but a bunch of quantity shapes. I tried deleting all the old models, which didnt help. Then I tried creating a brand new QTDSRD02 file and merged my shapes from 01 into that file, which also did nothing to help. I just copied the whole directory to my hard drive and I can confirm that the Undo is back to normal when I have the files local, so I agree that this is some sort of server/network issue. Now to figure out why its just certain files. Its almost like its a certain type of element that causes it. Perhaps a fill shape since this also occurred for me in an RDXSRD01 file where i most likely had Earthwork shapes.

I will look into it a bit further to see if can narrow it down. Thanks for letting me know about your issue.

  • Is there any white space or special characters, especially parenthesis '()' in the path to the files or project directory. More specifically, directories prior to the project root?

  • Brad, I have spaces and parenthesis in this file path.

  • Try to take the directory you copied to the local drive, rename it by just removing the parenthesis (leave the white space for now), and copy it back to the server location and test to see if the Undo is still slow. If the Undo function has not improved, remove the white space from the copied directory structure and test. Please. let us know your results.
    Thank you,

  • Removed both the spaces and the parenthesis and no improvement unfortunately.

  • I realized I missed a space in my directory the first time I tried to fix this. I have since removed the space, but I am still have this slow undo problem. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what the issue could be?

  • Take a look at the network infrastructure. We had a case where the 1 Gbps network card on the computer was running through a 10/100 switch and causing some hang-ups. However, the main culprit was that SS3 was reloading the huge terrain model every time we did an undo. You can check to see if it the network causing the problem by opening Windows Task Manage and switching to the network tab. If the network utilization drops to zero simultaneous with the completion of the undo then that's the problem.
  • Well this happening to me on SS2. I am back in my QTDSRD01 file and when I do an Undo, I do see the network usage start to perk up. Nothing more than like 0.1%, but its doing something. As soon as the undo is complete, it goes back to 0 like you say.

I tried an Undo in my DSGNRD01 file and it was immediate. I have no terrains of 3D elements of any kinda in this SS2 files, so it can't be attributed to that.

I am at a remote office in Michigan. My internet connection is a comcast business modem - > ASUS router -> Sophos Red 10 (10/100 internet tunnel to our office network) -> computer. So unfortunately im not getting a full 1 Gbps network, but if the connection were an issue, then it seems like I would have the slow Undo issue in all of my files. I need to figure out what makes some of these files different that they are causing this issue.

    Thanks

  • Hi,

Mike, this is exactly what is happening in our office. Our network is over-burdened already so that would go some way to explain it but is there a way to switch off the reloading of the terrain model? We aren't dealing with particularly big files but we do have a lot of them referenced in.

    Thanks
