Creating Ponds in SS3

I need to create some ponds in SS3. We are the drainage sub to the prime who is doing the roadway work. I believe ultimately we will get their corridor files to tie all of our stuff together, but for now, I would like to try and model my ponds. 

In SS2, what I would do is import a top of berm line for all but one side of the pond, then import the final side separately. What I found was the Corridor Modeler did not like it when an alignment closed on itself. To be clear, I did not store the alignment in the gpk, just imported the line as a plan graphic. 

I would then create a corridor for both lines, attach my template to each, then create a surface using both corridors to get my pond tin.

For SS3, I was provided with some good learning tools by Chuck Lawson after speaking with him and FLUG. That led me to this: http://communities.bentley.com/products/road___site_design/w/road_and_site_design__wiki/16717.creating-a-simple-pond-in-a-civil-cell

That starts by creating a horizontal complex element of the bottom of the pond. I went ahead and copied my "dumb" lines for the bottom of the pond in from my SS2 file that we were working on. I then used Horizontal Geometry -> Complex by Elements to create a complex element of the pond bottom. 

The next step has you use what I believe is 3D Geometry -> Create 3D by Slope to Target. This is to create the slope from the bottom of the pond up to either the slope break point or berm line.

What they dont mention is I believe you need to create a profile for this complex element you just created. So created a profile with constant elevation 17 for the bottom of my pond. 

Then I tried to create my first slope line, but I end up with this:

The slope does not go all the way around the pond because I believe I am having the same issue as I was in SS2; the alignment closes on itself. 

Am I using the correct tool to create the complex element in the first place? Is this even the method I should be using to create the pond in the first place? Im not sure how I will be able to relate this pond to the other corridors on my project if its not even a corridor to begin with.

  • There are a couple of ways to go about this. First when you create your slope construction have it end a tenth of a foot from your "closing" point. it should not hurt the triangulation. Another thing you can do is to not use a civil geometry object for the bottom of the pond. You can draw closed MicroStation element in the 3D model at the proper elevation and use the 3D tools to build your slopes from there. An added benefit to doing it this way is that you can then use the "Move" tool to move the pond bottom element. All of the slopes and berms you have constructed from this element will move with it, including your "tie-down" slopes. This makes fitting a pond in a tight spot a breeze. However, it will be next to impossible to change the shape of the pond without reconstructing the entire pond.
