Why is the text so big?
Have a look at the screenshot I posted which was from the EAP1 forum. The test is huge when compared to the old site. If it was smaller you would be able to get more threads in the list.
And here is a photo of the same page on my Galaxy S3. With text this big it is practically useless!
I'm going to guess that the design layout is targeted towards tablets (or touch screens) in portrait orientation. If I rotate one of my 24" screens to portrait, the layout looks a lot more user friendly (see pic). My knee jerk reaction is that as a desktop user with wide screens I am becoming a second class citizen, however, is that reaction just because I am used to dealing with 3x24" widescreens in landscape orientation?. Many applications these days let you re-arrange layouts as you see fit. I'm currently resiting the urge to flip all my monitors sideways to see if it would work or not. ;)
Just for fun I am trying this monitor orientation for a week to see if it flies or not.
Despite the very strong weird feeling I have when looking at my screens in this orientation, so far it's actually very workable. I have freed up quite a bit of desk space to the side of my 3x24" screens and it seems that a lot of content these days is just designed for this orientation. Applications like Outlook, Visual Studio and the Bentley products that I work on are all very amenable to different workspace layouts so aside from Lync Meetings (which mysteriously cannot be sized wider than one screen width; par for the course with Lync I suppose) I haven't found anything that is a deal breaker as yet, and I have found a number of positives in it.
