Why is the text so big?

Yes, the fonts are too big. Wayne provides some of the explanation, but we are going to fix that. No ETA at this time, but it is something we are going to address (we have dropped the size of the forum thread list some, so that should help in the meantime).

little bit off-topic but related to overall page design. every other forum I'm member in has option to turn on/off various elements of the page - be it picture, avatar, signature, links, whatever else in acc to the user. here I cannot even turn that annoying "Navigate the community" banner.
are there plans to enhance this into real forum?

Some things are configurable from a widget perspective, so they are "all or none" currently. You can enable/disable signatures via individual member settings:

Probably this one which takes up half my screen. This is all I can see from the home page.

Not sure what you mean there, as I do not see a Tour Tip.

Maybe talking at cross purpose but no worried. I as talking about the huge community banner which takes up half my screen on whatever devices I view this site on. See screenshot above. Surely this can be made smaller.
