Forums: New Posts are No Longer Higlighted

In recent days (mid-October 2019) I've noticed new posts appearing in Forums that aren't hilighted.  That's different from past behaviour where the title of a new post is embolded to make it easy to spot.

Paradoxically, I notice that a previous misbehaviour remains: a post that I have recently written is embolded.  But, I don't really need a signal telling me that I've just contributed to the Forum.

Do you mean that, when you view a forum (list of forum threads), a thread that contains new replies that you have not yet viewed is not shown in bold font? Have you tried refreshing the page? Is it possible that you viewer an alert related to the new reply?

Paradoxically, I notice that a previous misbehaviour remains: a post that I have recently written is embolded.  But, I don't really need a signal telling me that I've just contributed to the Forum.

This is a known issue that has been fixed in a newer version of the platform that Bentley Communities uses, but we have not yet upgraded. See item TE-14401 mentioned here.

    That's it!

  • Hi Jon, I cannot seem to reproduce this myself. Are you sure you didn't view a pop-up alert for the particular thread, or maybe the page needs to be refreshed if it was in a browser tab that was open before the new replies came in? Are you still seeing this issue?

  • Are you still seeing this issue?

Yes:  Here's a screenshot from a freshly-opened page.  There's one new topic highlighted (Read DGN Information...), which I've never read.  There's another older topic (Saved View is not Restored...), which has been updated but is not highlighted.

  • Ok, so I assume you tried refreshing the page. Did you see a live popup alert related to the thread in question? That might count as reading it. Beyond this, I would need to escalate this issue as I am not sure what else would cause this to happen to you, and I cannot reproduce it myself.

I agree: it's an obscure problem.  Why do some threads show highlighted when new or updated, yet others are not highlighted?

  • My best guess is that, for the cases where the thread is not highlighted yet you did not read it, the system thinks that you did read the latest reply. Hence my comment about how maybe an in-browser alert could have done this. I am not certain if this is the case, just a possibility that comes to mind. What I mean is that, if you have the setting set to do so, you will receive a pop-up alert in your web browser if you are signed in and looking at Bentley Communities while the new post comes in. Perhaps the viewing of that popup (maybe not necessarily clicking on it) may cause the thread to be flagged as read?
