Expand content navigation pane?

  • Hi Sujaan,

Thanks for the feedback. The width of the table of contents can be made wider, but currently the only other option would be to set the width to take up half of the page, which means the content on the right side would be much more narrow. This would likely make the overall user experience worse.

Typically Wiki content is found via search or from directory pages rather than navigating the TOC, though I do understand that the TOC may be well-organized in some Communities. There are a few communities that have removed the TOC completely when viewing individual articles, so that the body of the article takes up the full width. Example here)

  • Thanks for your response. Why is that the only other option? It's quite a standard operation in a GUI to resize a pane.

You are absolutely correct it would make it worse. On the other hand, the search function is quite terrible if you don't put in the exact keyword in in the article. When a user is trying to learn Bentley tools, it is more effective to review all the available content titles and then visit the wiki pages that need to be reviewed. Especially, while learning the right keywords to look up.

Additionally, you can achieve this same functionality by implementing a new navigation page, that lists all the lower level tree items. It can be at the top of each Product page and list a full page view of the Navigation Pane. That way we can have a web page open with TOC and then use that to navigate to specific content.

  • I understand your concerns and thank you for your feedback and suggestions. At this time we are limited by the capabilities of the platform that Bentley Communities runs on. We plan to upgrade to a newer version of the platform in the near future which may bring about a better user experience in this area.
