Forum glitches / requests

Glitches:

Maybe some of these will come under known issues, but I have noticed in my time with the forums that:

  1. Sometimes the user profile "bubble" does't draw at the correct width. I'm going to guess that this might be related to known issue listed as "Intermittent "'getBoundingClientRect' is null or not an object" errors when rendering a page."
  2. User ratings don't seem to make a lot of sense. For example, leaving user names out for the time being, I can show User A with 2,287 points, 1 green bar and Bronze status, User B with 4,511 points, 3 green bars and Bronze status, and User C with 4,090 points, zero green bars and Bronze status. This makes little sense. What does the green bar mean and why can it vary between users with respect to points?
  3. Expanding on #2, User D has 34,636 points and 7 green bars (out of 8). If 4,511 points is 3 green bars then how can 34,636 be only 7 green bars (and still be Bronze status)? Is this green bar scale a log scale?
  4. I'm wondering how anyone will get to Silver (or beyond). It seems to require extraordinary input. User D (from #3) is a BeMVP and probably the most active user in our area, yet still Bronze.
  5. Some users that are Bentley colleagues are not showing as such in the user profile bubble. e.g., I can show a case where a user's profile shows that they are Bentley SELECTsupport, yet not also a Bentley colleage?
  6. Also noticed that some Bentley colleages get a graphic at the end of their posts to indicate as such, but mine do not show this graphic. My "bubble" does show it.
  7. Finally the Products drop down on the main page loads to reveal 3 columns. The top of the 3rd column contains "Bridge Design and Engineering" and "and 6 more...", but there is a whole column of blank space where the 6 more could have been listed. (Browser IE8).

Hopefully this is the correct place to submit issues like this. Please let me know if I should follow an alternative procedure.

Requests:

  1. Provide the ability for a poster to tag their question as answered, so on the forum overview page it will be clear which posts have been concluded and which deserve further attention. (Posts that have replies but have not been marked as answered could be marked "Potentially answered".)
  2. Further to #1, it seems at least from this post I am making we can select "question" or "discussion". I'm not seeing any visual indication of that on the forum summary page either; it would be helpful to know which threads are perhaps open ended discussions, versus questions that may have already been resolved (or potentially resolved).

Thanks.

EDIT: I notice that perhaps something similar to the requests above are appearing in this specific forum (nice work!), but it not yet manifesting in the Hydraulics and Hydrology forum. I'm going to guess that this is perhaps something in testing to be rolled out to other forums later?

  • For #1, that has been brought up previously, but recently has been fairly rare (in fact, I have not seen it in a long time). That said, this will be looked into... thanks for pointing it out.

For the points and rankings inquiries (#2-#4) , the Demystifying Member Points and Post Rankings blog article might be helpful in clarifing that.

WRT #5, we made a conscious decision to not put Bentley and SELECTsupport "tags" on the same member profile. The latter assumes the former, so having both of them (at least in the profile) seemed redundant. True, this is not consistent with the fly-outs, but given that the profiles are more visible (i.e. no action by the reading member is needed to see them), we felt that keeping things simple was the way to go. Now why not do the same with BeMVPs? Simply because BeMVPs can be Bentley colleagues or not Bentley colleagues. We also did not want to set a precedent (at least not from the start) of having a "tag" for every "type" of member (e.g. SELECT, Academic, Bentley Technology Partner, Bentley Channel Partner, Bentley Content Partner, etc., etc., etc.) We did something like that at a user event many years ago with "ribbon tags" on name badges and although it did raise visibility, it became more of a distraction.

Regarding #6, the profile is currently manually populated. That will be updated for you. This should become less of an issue when single sign-on across all Bentley Web properties is put in place (no ETA for that right now, but it is an active project).

AFA #7 is concerned, that is not the first time that has been pointed out. We have been trying to figure out how to "control" that -- it seems to be a limitation in the system being used to host the site (not pointing fingers by any means, but we rely on another software vendor for that).

For the "requests", that has been brought up before, too, the Answers to threads are not stacked by time of posting thread in this community forum provides a lengthy "discussion" regarding this.

  • Hi Phil,

Firstly thanks for the super fast response.

Re #1 : I am able to reproduce that fairly often. In the scheme of things it is very minor.

Re: #2-#4 (I'm typing this whilst in a conference call so check that out in due course. Thanks for the link).

Re: #5. OK, I raised this because I can see one user in our group has both Colleage and SELECTsupport tags (and also BeMVP), but another has only SELECTsupport. The inconsistency is what made me raise it. Not a big deal, but I just figured I'd bring that up. I can let you know exact examples if you want to follow this up.

Re: #6 - Looks like it works now; thanks.

Re: #7. My main concern there was to know that it was a known issue. I wouldn't classify it as a major problem but included it after I got the courage to raise this list of issues. :-)

    Cheers,

    Wayne.
