BE Communities - Auto Sign in

Is there any way to ensure my user account remains signed in to this website? I find myself having to sign it once a day regardless of having 'Next time automatically sign me in' ticked. The browsers I use are Opera and Firefox and none stay logged in. Additionally Opera's password manager does work properly with login box of this site as the site treats the automatically entered password as if it was not there. I've frequented countless discussion forums and none have had constantly forced me to log in and its quite annoying to browse to this site and find that I'm not logged in again and again.

Can something be done about this please?

Thanks

Barry

  • This topic has been brought up before, but deserves some additional explanation. There are several things associated with what you describe.

    1. We "reset" the system hosting the site from time-to-time... the timing is based on a number of factors, but is mainly tied to optimizing site performance.
    2. This is really not so different from many systems out there -- I personally experience something similar with Facebook, Twitter, and a good number of reputable Web sites that I use regularly (e.g. banking, insurance, etc.) Granted the latter are usually over secure http (i.e. https://...), but the practice of hosted sites getting "reset" is a trend that we have been noticing.
    3. We would love to believe that everyone who signs up to our site is an honest-to-goodness user. However, that is just not the case in today's world. We were seeing instances where "bogus accounts" were getting created simply to set up an initial open conduit where the "source" would eventually pump spam and other filth into our site. The reset breaks those connections, and we were not seeing any of these "bogus accounts" reconnecting.

There are other factors, too, but those are the primary ones that we believe anyone might be interested in. We are looking into ways to minimize (and possibly eliminate) the need for the reset, but for the time being, the every-so-often instance of re-signing in is all that is necessary to maximize uptime, minimize slowdowns, and try to keep the near-nefarious activity off our site, all to improve the user experience.

  • Phil,

I think the reset is a good idea for the reasons you stated, but to do it 2 or 3 times a day is a bit much. I nearly always have to log in, even after the shortest break between sessions. I can't comment on FB (urghh) or twiitter, but nearly all (if not all) of the other forums/discussion groups that I frequent don't require the constant re login.

  • Hmmm... I am on this system quite a bit during the course of any day, and do not recall the last time I saw that, if ever.

  • Lets just say I've had to log in to reply to your response, when I had previously logged in before lunch, not 2 hours ago. This is the general state of play, and is most frustrating.

  • It appears then that the problem is IP Tracking. I'll have a test of this and let you know.
