The red cross next to the name in a member or community avatar that you are "connected" with means to disconnect yourself from the member or community.
Not really sure what happened with the BeMVPs link (below), but that should be updated now.
Phil Chouinard: Not sure I have seen avatars with "a red X through them".
Added pic below. The little X is not through them but next to the names btw. My looking bad.
Phil Chouinard: If you could point one of those out, we can take a look at that. WRT "a little yellow star", might that be the star of the BeMVPs?
I think that could be the case (if MVP means Most Valuable Professional), but the link does not work.

Ivo Blaauw: Sometimes some avatars have a red X through them. Others have a little yellow star twinkling in the upper corner. I allways believed it had something to do with the online status, but could not figure out what it ment. Help does not cover all possibilities. Ivo

Thex1138: .... hmm also perhaps when members are traversing other profiles there can also be an indication of whether the user you're looking at is online in addition to seeing their names highlighted next to their community posts... For example their Avatar image can be highlighted or the image frame line can change colour and be a thicker blue line and greyed when they're offline... ?

Seeing if a member is online (or not) is the reason for the little figurehead dude that is next to the member's name in posts -- it would be many times more likely that other members would see that.
