Be Communities Update

As the first of various follow-ups to provide more details regarding new and improved Bentley Communities, we are now looking at an estimated time of early October to complete the first step in migrating Be Communities. We will provide sufficient advance notice of when this will happen, and currently it looks like the site will be inaccessible for 24-48 hours to accomplish the initial goal.

One of the many things we plan to do in the initial phase is to reorganize the Products area of the site, mainly to "flatten" the hierarchy and make it simpler and much easier to navigate to the Support Community to applies to you (this is the "manual" part of our overall solution... more automated approaches are under design now and in the coming future). Here is a partial snapshot of what the proposed organization will look like.

In floating over the column “headings”, a brief description of each will show the following:

  • Product Categories:
These Support Communities are for information and answers to questions that are specific to Bentley products.
  • Product Areas:
These Support Communities are for information and answers to questions regarding technology and functionality available in multiple Bentley products.
  • Product Names:
These are links to the Product Category Support Communities. Click on the respective alphabetical index link for the first letter in the Bentley product you are using. Or, press CtrlF in your browser window to locate the product by name.

  • UPDATE: We are moving the ETA of the cut-over of the first phase of the Be Communities migration to the week of November 4 – most likely towards the end of that week to minimize downtime. One the reasons for this is that we do not want interfere with the Year In Infrastructure event, which is one of our largest events taking place October 29-31 in London.

  • UPDATE: We are moving the ETA of the first phase of the Be Communities migration to be not before November 15. The reasons for this are many, as there are numerous "moving parts" involved. As we get closer to determing a cut-over date, we will provide that information here. Thanks in advance for you patience and understanding while we work hard to bring a better user-experience to you.

  • We continue to work towards this and recently worked through some issues that held back the cut-over much longer than we anticipated. Although we still have some things to work out, the first week in December is a good possibility for the cut-over, barring any unforeseen issues.

  • A good amount of progress has happened in the past week regarding the first phase of the Be Communities migration. There are still a good number of things to do, but we now have high confidence that the Be Communities migration will commence at 6:00 pm US Eastern on Thursday, December 12 and last untl the morning (US Eastern) of Monday, December 16.

For the most part, you should mainly notice a change in user interface, but there are some things that you should be aware of in advance of this cut-over:

    • The site will be redirected to an "Under Construction" page during the migration period
    • Any activity that took place previously will not be accessible -- the content (e.g. forum threads, wiki articles, etc.) will be there, but the activity stream for that content will be starting from new
    • Some content and areas of the site will be moved to new (and more efficient) locations
    • Current member "points" are being refactored and a new "badging system" will be in place when the site comes back online

    Stay tuned for more information.

  • We are still on track to start the Be Communities migration at 6:00 pm US Eastern on Thursday, December 12 and still expect that to last untl the morning (US Eastern) of Monday, December 16 -- although it is possible that the site may become available before then.
