Posting videos and formats.

I'm starting this thread to discuss postings of videos on this site and or links to videos.

I've run into a number of issues with videos over the years.  Mainly they center around format.    Even videos from Bentley personal are all over the board when it comes to format.  As video and on demand streaming continue to increase their roll I believe to would be beneficial to standardize on a format.

Perhaps this is just posting some sort of guidelines.  Possibly BSI could process uploaded file to come format.

Additionally playback currently seems restricted to how large the video can be played back which limits there effectiveness.

I believe H.264 (mp4) is the current standard of choice.  It will play on the latest browsers and is supported on all the major desktop and mobile platforms.  Additionally most platforms are able to decode this format via hardware which is a big advantage for mobile devices.

I'd like to hear other peoples thoughts on this.

  • We do pay attention to video formats :) FWIW, there is a really nice "is it supported" Web page on caniuse.com that provides a decent overview of what supports what. It would be nice to "standardize" on one video format, but I do not believe it would be possible to do -- there are various factors involved... some that we have control of, some that we do not. That said, we are in the process of putting a video transcoding extension on this site (most likely in the next week or so). This extension optimizes video by automatically transcoding videos to take advantage of the latest HTML5 capabilities available from the most popular browsers (e.g. IE, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari) without requiring any extra plugins. As videos are uploaded and viewed within the community, they are automatically transcoded into the widely-supported HTML5 formats H.264 and WebM. Non-HTML5 browsers play the the H.264 version via Flash. The video transcoder supports these standard video formats:

    • 3gp
    • avi
    • flv
    • m4v
    • mkv
    • mov
    • mp2
    • mp4
    • mpeg
    • mpg
    • ogv
    • webm
    • wmv

  • Phil,

That is good news... I think.  Just a bit confused as these seem to say the opposite.

"It would be nice to "standardize" on one video format, but I do not believe it would be possible to do "

    followed by

"As videos are uploaded and viewed within the community, they are automatically transcoded into the widely-supported HTML5 formats H.264 and WebM."

I guess maybe your standardizing on 2, close enough for me.  Just getting tired of dealing with plugins especially for wmv, avi and mov formats.  These not only require the player they may also require downloading proprietary codecs as well.

Anyway its all good news looking forward to it.  Hopefully we can also play them back at original resolution.

    Thanks,

    DavidG

  • It does seem contradictory, but the main point (that it looks like was not articulated enough) is that there are and will continue to be different video formats generated from various sources. What we are looking to do is minimize the number of things that need to be in place to render them properly -- it should just be simple. We anticipate that this encoding extension will make it simple. So, yes! Good news :)

  • Has there been recent testing of this?

The video I embedded in my recent post; https://communities.bentley.com/products/microstation/microstation_visualization/f/visualization-forum-1977638070/159404/lumenrt-360-degree-fly-over

only works in the Microsoft Edge browser. It does not work in Microsoft Explorer, Firefox, or Android browsers.
