Hello,
I asked this question in the OpenRoads forum but was recommended to post this question here as well. You can see the other post here (https://communities.bentley.com/products/road___site_design/f/geopak-inroads-mx-openroads-forum/210551/getting-error-that-says-civil-data-found-that-is-from-a-newer-version-of-a-civil-product-when-trying-to-use-openroads-learn-server).

I am working through the Learn Server training lessons for OpenRoads but receive an error when opening the downloadable lesson files from the server. The error only allows me to open the file in "Read-Only" mode which prevents me from being able to work through the lessons alongside the instructor.
Full error message:
I am using OpenRoads Designer CONNECT Edition - 2019 Release 2 Update 7 - Version 10.07.03.18.
I've tried doing a "save as" to a different version of the software or simply just saving the file in another location and attempting to reopen it. I've gotten to where I can open the file in editable mode but it loses a lot of the data that was originally included in the file, including some required data for the lessons.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Hi Andrew, could you provide the link to the course on LEARNserver please?
I can't remember exactly which lesson this was from as I've done a few since and they all have the same issue. But I'm in this Learning Path (https://learn.bentley.com/app/Public/ViewLearningPathDetails?lpId=111748&callFrom=MyLp) and this would likely be from either the QuickStart for Terrain Display or Navigating Drainage and Utilities module.
Hi Andrew,
OpenRoads Designer dgn files contain both graphical and non-graphical data. When new capabilities are added to OpenRoads Designer, the structure of that data may be expanded to store data associated with the new capabilities. This is what we call a major version and is designated by the second digits in the version number. For example, 10.07.xx.xx is different than 10.08.xx.xx or 10.09.xx.xx. The OpenRoads Designer software automatically upgrades files when necessary so if a 10.07 file is opened using 10.08 or 10.09 software it will automatically upgrade. Older versions of software however cannot open newer versions of data for read/write. For example, a 10.07 application cannot open 10.08 or 10.09 data files. The training files you are trying to use are in a newer 10.08 or 10.09 version than your installed 10.07 software. You will need to upgrade your software to a later version. We recommend upgrading to the latest software which is 2020 Release 3 (10.09.00.91).

What are we supposed to do if there is a reason we haven't upgraded - such as the requirement to stick to a specific version for a major client? What are we supposed to do if IT or upper management doesn't want us to upgrade?
Is Bentley planning to indicate in the training description which version of the software is required for the data set? Since there is such a drastic version disconnect and Bentley has abandoned forward/backward interoperability, it would be helpful to know beforehand that we can no longer use the training data set.

This is a very very good point Mary B. I too am having to work in Power GeoPak because my "Major Client" hasn't upgraded.
I like what I see in ORD... sure wish i could do my work in ORD and have the ability to turn it in as an older version.
