Welcome! Unless you accidentally clicked on this link you have expressed an interest in learning more about how you can use the Bentley LEARN Server to access its vast wealth of training content. This document gives you the briefest of orientations on how it works for you.
This wiki article is designed to assist university students in learning how to use the Bentley LEARN Server. However, the fundamentals presented apply equally to commercial users so don't hesitate to give it a quick read. (Note: OnDemand eLearning: Lectures are only accessible to learners participating in the Bentley LEARN Training Subscription.)
NOTE: The Bentley LEARN Server requires the use of Internet Explorer 6, 7 or 8 plus Windows Media Player 9 or better to operate properly.
The Bentley Institute provides an enhanced method for browsing courses through the use of design discipline oriented Learning Paths. Instead of digging through what could be hundreds of course offerings, you can now browse a focused list of courses covering individual Bentley products and how they fit into a broader discipline-oriented learning path. To see this great resource in action, visit the Bentley Institute's Find OnDemand eLearning.
Learning is a personal enterprise. Although you may spend time in a classroom with other students what you learn is yours alone. The same goes for online training. For this reason, each student is issued their own personal login; you will receive this from your instructor or the administrator of the lab. Having a personal logging means all your learning activities are captured and applied to your personal transcript within the Bentley LEARN Server. As an added bonus when you complete a course you have the option to print out a certificate of accomplishment from Bentley Systems acknowledging you have completed the online course. To get started, follow this procedure:1) To access the Bentley LEARN Server, click this link. This presents the Global OnDemand Home Page in Guest Learner mode. 2) Log in by clicking the Login link in the upper left corner of the page.
3) Enter your login as provided by your instructor or site administrator.
At this point you can begin to search for courses of interest or sign up for specific courses assigned to you by your instructor.
The main menu along the left side of the page is the primary navigation system for acessing all Bentley LEARN Server services. Each link in this menu presents a different page within the Bentley LEARN Server. For instance, clicking on the "Course Offerings" link brings up the offering catalogs and a series of important "buttons" ( Currently Registered Training, Learning Report and Review, etc). Clicking on the Currently Registered Training shows you all of the courses you have signed up for on the site.
One of the methods first time users of the system used to find courses of interest is to browse the course catalogs. All courses are located in one catalog or another. The catalogs themselves are organized by design/engineering discipline. If you are a first time visitor to the site, this is an ideal method for finding out how much training you have at your fingertips.
1) Click on Course Offerings button on the left hand menu.
You are presented with several catalogs you can now browse.2) Click on a catalog of interest. You are presented with the content of the catalog. You can browse this list for interesting courses. When you click on the name of a course, a page detailing the contents of the course appears. If you are interested in the course, there is a Register button at the top of the page you click once to register for the course.
An alternative to browsing the catalogs directly is to search for courses based on a specific criteria such as the name of the product covered. To do this key word type searching, use the Advanced Search feature. From here you can specify text for the Bentley LEARN Server to search through selected catalogs and locate the courses that are of interest to you.
1) Click on the Advanced Search button in the left hand menu.
The Advanced Search page appears.
Note the many fields you have that you can search on from title through to the description of the course. For example, if you are interested in GEOPAK courses, you may try entering the search word "GEOPAK" in the title search and select the Civil catalog to search.
2) Select the catalogs to search and click the Search button. The Bentley LEARN Server will return a list much like a catalog that provides you an easy method to "browse" the results to find the exact course you are looking for.
Before you can launch a specific course you must first register for that course. This is a simple process. If you are browsing the catalog you can simply click the "Register" link found on every course entry in the catalog. If you are reviewing a course's long description, the Register link is at the top of the page.
1) In a catalog or search results page, click on the name of a course in which you are interested.
2) At the top of the page, click the Register link.
It immediately changes to "Already Registered". This indicates you are ready to start the course. You will also receive a confirmation email nearly instantaneously confirming your registration. It also provides additional information about accessing the course.
The final step to get started with your online course is to launch it.
1) Click the Course Offerings button in the left menu if you are not already on the Course Catalog page.
2) From the left side menu click the "My Registered Training" button.
A list of the courses you have registered for but not yet completed appears on the page.
3) Identify the course you want to take. To the right of the course name, click the Launch link.
Depending on the type of course you registered for you will either be presented with a video window to watch a video lecture or a flash player for your hands-on course. You have now started the course and are ready to begin the learning process.
At any time you can quit by selecting the Close icon in the upper right corner of the player's window [X]. The Bentley LEARN Server always remembers where you left off so you can simply launch the course next time to pick up where you left off.
NOTE: You do not have to be on the same computer to continue your learning session. As long as the computer is Windows based and has an internet connection you always have easy access to your online learning courses.
Depending on the type of course you have chosen, the course browser window will present a specific format of content. For the Lecture type of course, a video window appears and the video associated with the course starts playing. If you have chosen a hands-on course, you are presented with a table of contents which, as you select a topic in this table, presents the hands-on text for reading and execution within the Bentley product associated with the course.
A hands-on course in progress. The solid circles represent chapters completed, the half filled in progress and the "camera" chapters yet to be taken.
As you progress through the training materials, whether video or hands-on, the Bentley LEARN Server monitors your activity. With videos, it "knows" where you are plus or minus 5 seconds. In hands-on courses, it knows what page you are on and the amount of time you've spent in the chapter. This is the management part of a Learning Management System (Bentley LEARN Server is a learning management system).
As you progress through the educational content, feel free to close your session at any time. When you do, the Bentley LEARN Server records the time marker in the video or the page of the hands-on material you last viewed. When you relaunch the lecture video or hands-on course it presents an opportunity for you to resume from the last saved point or start over.
As you complete online courses, the Bentley LEARN Server automatically records this status to your permanent Bentley Professional Training Transcript. You can access it at any time using the following procedure.
1) From the left hand menu, click the My Transcript button.
The page presents a short description of what you'll find in your transcript.
2) Click the "View my transcript" link or the picture of the transcript.Your transcript appears that lists all of the courses you have completed.
With your Professional Training Transcript displayed it is a simple case to print out a hard copy of an individual course certificate.1) Click on the title of a completed course. The Certificate of Accomplishment appears.
2) Follow the printing instructions listed on this page to print out your Certificate of Accomplishment.
Once you have completed your education and have been hired by an design/engineering firm or a governmental agency, you can transfer your personal training account to your employer by putting in a request via your company/agency's site administrator. They will, in turn, notify Bentley to make the change to your account so all of your completed training remains on your transcript.
Your professor or site administrator may opt to provide you with a link directly to the course they want you to sign up for. Upon clicking the link your browser will open and you will be presented with the long description of the course but the "Register" link is replaced with a "Login to Register" link. You must log in as described in "Logging into the Bentley LEARN Server" above then you will be able to click the "Register" link and launch the course as described in the "Launching a registered course" section of this document.
