Any rail or other infra jobbie in the UK will now be under the spotlight cost-wise. I would imagine that all those BEP's would be dusted off and more BIM assisted cost checks will be demanded earlier and earlier on.

I can see this tool being used quite a bit.

Great to note that there is now the option to use Parametric Cells for the panels.

Going forward, it would be great to be able to also define a Parametric Cell for the mullions / transoms as well.

I understand that Parametric Cells would be able to leverage the new Named Presentations functionality, replacing Compound Cells. This will allow the user to get a higher LOD, more detailed representation of the mullions, jambs. sills etc for the drawings. Things like hatches/fills for the different materials, details like cappings etc would not really be required in 3d or when developing the overall design but will be great to have automatically generated for the drawing output. Embellishing miles of the stuff for an office tower project -for example- would be tedious and expensive.

I was wondering if there was a way to get the Place Object tool to place Shared Cells instead of Graphic / Normal ones.

For example, a lot of interior fit out items like lockers, sanitary fittings, end devices, light fittings etc do not really need to flex or be parametrically linked to their attached metadata but can add quickly to file size.

2. What is the recommended workflow to replace the Graphic Cells with Shared Cells?

Modify / Place Object tool - Link to Cell folder?

Hellos,

Is there a quick way to jump to the folder containing the Cell that the Modify/Place object tool is looking at?

This would really be helpful. Edit Catalog Item opens up the DGS Catalog Item xml but there doesn't seem to be a path to where the Cell is stored.

The old right-click Building Element Information did provide an Edit button but only for PAZ Cells. It also automatically loaded PCS.

Having to go to the Backstage and rummage through the Config settings to find the path(s) is a bit of a pain.

Couldn't find anything in the OBD help file. From the screenshots, it looks like it is based on the Bmech Asssembly Builder tool.

What is interesting is that building elements can also be included in the assembly. It would be interesting to see how this can be used. It would be great to utilise the smart connections available in the Mech discipline to help in an architectural context.

Some examples:

1. A lot of WC's and sanitary accommodation fittings will be selected and positioned by the architects and not the MEP guys. But, each fitting will need to be connected to an MEP service. It would be good to allow the architects to group their components as assemblies and not just Cells.... which are difficult to tunnel into and resistant to quantification.

2. Similarly, elements like Cable Management Systems (CMS), lighting, equipment cabinets, information / advertising display panels and end-devices generally will need to intertwine both architectural and MEP components.

Discussion Starter I

Start a discussion in a forum that receives 5 replies.

Update on Update 13

The update on update 13 blog post has some welcome news that Bentley appears to be focusing on fixing the numerous bugs.
I just started testing this method out but it seems to be working great so I thought I would share.

I am using the Excel Lookup table to populate various Text Fields for all my Sheet models. In a separate model, I place a cell with an Item Type definition attached to it. Then place Text Fields that are linked to the Cell. The Text Fields correspond to my border sheet information. I copy the Cell & linked Text Fields to all my sheets. Then by selecting the Properties of the Cell, I change the text fields from a default Heading to the Sheet Number corresponding to my file in the Excel Lookup table.

I found the background information from the Forum site postings by Snehal Deshpande:

(Technology Preview) Expression to Derive Data from Lookup Tables

General Access Technology preview in MicroStation Update 12

https://communities.bentley.com/products/microstation/f/microstation-forum/176214/connect-u12-technology-preview-expression-to-derive-data-from-lookup-tables

https://docs.bentley.com/LiveContent/web/MicroStation%20Help-v14/en/LookUp.html

The key for me to get this to work was the development of the “Pick List”. I listed 500 sheets in this pick list. If I had one suggestion, it would be to have a Move Up & Move Down button on the Values side of the Pick List Manager. Make it a bit more robust.

I made a cell with the Item Type attached to it.

Here are my Item Type definitions.

Here is a before and after example of the Text Fields that reflect choosing the proper Sheet file from the pulldown.

Pulldown set to Headings Pulldown set to Sheet-001

Here is a snapshot of the Properties dialog of the selected Cell showing the Expression values of the Item Type. This is where I change the pulldown from Headings to Sheet-001.

Pulldown selections

Here is a snapshot of the Excel file lookup table. Note that the pink colored cells should never change since they are utilized by the Lookup expression. The orange row of headings can change and the columns of data under the headings can be changed for each sheet.

This could even be utilized as a Sheet Index by making a heading for Sheet Total and Sheet Name/Number.

Here are the variables that I used:

# File that contains the Item Type and Pick List for Text Substitution method

MS_DGNLIBLIST > $(_USTN_ORGANIZATION)dgnlib/TextSubstitution/TextSubstitution_CE.dgnlib

# Project Directory to locate Text Substitution Excel file

ITEMTYPE_EXCELLOOKUP = $(_USTN_WORKSETDGNS)Shared/Support/TextSubstitution_CE.xlsm

I apologize for this lengthy posting. My goal was to share this process or possibly start a discussion to see if anyone else is using the lookup table as a text substitution method.

The efficient use of components is pretty key to making sure BIM workflows are as frictionless and lucrative as possible.

Some questions:

1. Component tracking / indexing: Is there a way to track which files the component is inserted into? This will be key to replacing / updating components when something new comes along. They always do. The lack of a reliable tracking mechanism has always held Mstn back in the past by preventing the user from getting Cells to behave like Refs on demand.

2. Linking to manufacturer's or BIM libraries: Is there a way to subscribe to portal services like NBS, BIMObject etc? It would be good to be able to access their components using the same CC interface. And also get notification when a component is updated.

3. What about all the .xml schema information or Excel data sheets that are needed for OpenPlant; and OpenBuildings' older Datagroup System .xsd filles? I think that even Revit has its Shared Parameter file. These are currently stored on the local server or PW. Updates / synchronisation will be required. Scripting or MS Flow tools? It would be unreasonable to expect the user to have to manually convert / synchronise the thousands of components available without some automation help. Disciplines like MEP would suffer most.

4. Will CC be able to function like a Parametric Cell Studio or Revit Family Editor environment? It only seems to accommodate uploading and superseding components. Ideally, the user would open the file and edit the component before saving it back to the 'online' store. Having duplicated unmanaged files would be very inefficient and a recipee for errors.

5. Will CC be able to support GenerativeComponents? Please note that GC now supports multiple models. GC components would have nested components. Automatic updates or notification? Ditto for Functional Components.

6. Replication: RFA components currently need to be converted into Functional Components using re-mapping a lot of parameters/properties, and vice versa. This would be stored as an xml or settings file. It would be good to be able to store this on CC to allow automatic replication of any components regardless of originating format. This would allow cross platform teams to share the same component repository/library. A Revit user would see the RFA while the Mstn/OBD user would see a Functional Component replica of the same component. I think that Structural Synchronizer-type workflows would be subsumed/leveraged to deal with components (more granularity)....

Objects attached to structural elements

Hi

I'm playing around a little with parametric cells. I've created some steel plates and can now place them through the place object tool. When I place or later copy them they're getting attached to the element I click on on placement. So when I later move my, for instance, beam around, the plates are moved along with it.

Same goes for when I add my beam to a named group, all the objects attached to it will also be added to that named group.

Is there a way to see this hierarchy of elements? And attach, detach elements from each other?

Regards,
