I have a client that basically wants a navisworks review file with tags/ attributes. My first thought was that if i am able to convert my dgn with item types to dwg with block attributes this would work ( imodel or dgn with item types are also not compattible with navisworks ). But so far i have not found a way, the item types are lost when i save to dwg. Any ideas if this is possible or not ?

Using the latest vercion of Microstation Connect

I have received this question from my customer and because my knowledge of AECOsim Building Designer, especially CONNECT Edition, and also IFC format are limited, I am looking for existing experience and best practices:

Is it possible, when a model is exported to IFC format, to include also Item Types?

There is a model that was created partially in MicroStation (both V8i and CONNECT Edition) and these elements have data attached as Item Types. These elements (often plain cells, old Smart Solids but also new Parametric solids) are not recognized as ABD elements. Another part of this project was created directly in ABD and now the whole 3D model should be exported to IFC.

When I tried to export it in ABD CE U2, not ABD elements are exported as geometries, but Item Types data seem to be lost. Is it possible to export Item Types also or it's not supported (yet)? Or is there any requirement / preparation steps that have to be done like the element have to exist in ABD catalog or there is some special IFC export configuration / mapping?

With regards,

Hi

Is there a known issue with printing patterns to PDF using the Bentley PDF driver? We've found that hatching can increase the file size by a significant amount using the Bentley driver compared to printer.pltcfg and using Acrobat:

Our test case (I'd upload it but I can't work out how to attach files to the Communities Forum!) Acrobat at 600 dpi gives a PDF file of 281KB

Bentley PDF driver = 517KB

Acrobat without any patterning (switching it off in View Attributes) = 241KB

Bentley PDF driver without patterning = 304KB.

Why such a large difference? On larger project files this is making the difference between 600KB & over 3MB! I presume it's the way MicroStation handles the pattern representation, maybe in a similar fashion to the rasterisation of OLE objects(?). It would be great to get some insight and some advice on how to reduce the file sizes and still retain patterns.

Thanks

Nigel

It is common (typical) practice to want to adjust a couple of line weights or colours further on down the reference chain, or even in the final sheet file.

Imagine the scenario:

3D design model(s)

ref into

3D "assembly" model (composition model)

create

Drawing model as a separate dgn (can adjust overrides using Ref Presentation > View Flags)

ref into

2D design model (cannot adjust overrides)

and on into the sheet (cannot adjust overrides)

Part of the problem seems to be that the DV levels don't display as used in a downstream design model. Again, not sure why this is, but it's most irritating.

If this question has ever been answered, please point me in the direction of the solution.

When using File > Import > IFC, with Ignore Storey Containment unticked, the DGN files created do not seem to use the correct seed file. Either that or the import process ignores the global origin and imports the IFC into "true" space. i.e. the IFC model imports many km outside of the SWA, despite the coordinate system being set correctly.

DWG can support extension line linetypes.

For example, in a DGN file, you have a Dimension style where the Symbology > Extension Lines > Style is set to 4. When this converts to DWG, the Linetype ext line 1 and 2 are set incorrectly to ByBlock.

Similarly, if you open a DWG in MIcroStation that has Linetype ext line 1 and 2 set to, for example, Center, MicroStation greys this option out and sets them to 0.

The Help file states:

Set the Style to be the same as the style of the active dimension element. Do not use different line styles on dimension components (dimension lines, extension lines, terminators, and text).

But there doesn't seem to be a reason for this as extension lines can be modified in both DGN and DWG Dim styles.
