Safety analysis tools and software continue to become more important in the highway engineering world as research on how our designs affect highway safety continues to strengthen. There are other programs, but IHSDM is the most prevalent, is free and will likely continue to be the preferred model for all agencies. It is well supported by FHWA and its use has been gaining momentum lately. I understand this has been examined in the past but it is time to get this going again. FHWA's developer for the IHSDM may be able to assist.

My agency is transitioning to OpenRoads in the near future and is also looking at the LandXML file reporting process to see if we can at least export the data needed by IHSDM more efficiently. The number one obstacle to using IHSDM is data entry, so anytime we can improve this process, it is a win.

Being able to integrate the CADD, design and GIS worlds with safety analyst tools to be able to do this analysis dynamically or nearly automatically as designs progress and change would be such a tremendous boost to creating better, safer highway projects around the world!

Thanks,

Matt
