Sean 'Bear' Forward
Structural Designer
Engineering Systems Co-Ordinator\Manager
3D Modeller and Plant Visualization Specialist
I’ve recently moved back into the design group full time as Lead Structural Designer on the Roy Hill project for AMEC. I believe my extensive experience in working with project systems and working at the front end with shop detailing has given me the right skills to manage such a diverse project when it comes to the delivery of the Package 1phase of the Roy Hill project.
CAD Manager responsibilities including managing design systems for over 300 designers in 5 cities across Australia and overseas. Future proof the design team by laying out versioning plans for all software vendors. Working with software vendors to make sure company critical paths and issues are resolved. Coordinate and implement all systems procedures, user guides and other documentation as required. Liaise with Design Manager and Office Managers to make sure the systems group covers all design group system requirements and suggest ‘out of the box’ available solutions as well as required customisations.
I have been a CAD Administrator for Bentley Systems software as well as a beta tester with Bentley for more than 12 years. I have helped develop a scalable workspace environment that works for firms from 3 to 300. This means the system grows with the firm and leaves the efforts where they are required instead of having to reinvent the wheel for each project.
Having come from a design background, and still being involved in design, I believe my experience is enhanced further in that the systems and processes come from a knowledge of the design systems rather than being a software boffin. This means I can not only administrator the systems, but provide the procedures, guidelines and best practise trainig for a number of disciplines.
Specialties: Bentley software administration including AECOsim, TriForma, Bentley Structural, Bentley Architectural, InRoads, All versions of MicroStation to V8i. I also have experience in FrameWorks Plus, PDS, X-Steel and now Tekla Structures.

CAD Systems Manager.
Due to the sheer volume of work and the number of people the build now supported, in July of 2011 I was promoted to Systems Manager and went ahead with growing the systems group to 4 people by early 2012. Day to day running of the build was transferred to the new members as I took on the managers roll.
I worked with our Brisbane RIO group to implement their first 3Di project fully supported by the Perth office. This meant that we did travel to Brisbane on a monthly basis to help with training and provide some face to face contact.
I worked together with the RIO IST group to identify some major issues with their virus checking software which was causing a major performance loss with their new high end CAD machines.
We started a Design Leads meeting to help us work together more as a team and have a better understanding on both Design and CAD issues. This covered topics such as build gaps and issues, software versioning\updates\rollouts, training and much more.
We also formed a Super User group. The idea of this was to have users at the front end of the CAD build development and testing so that we had people giving us feedback sooner, but also help us make people in all groups aware of build updates, how to use them and what changes would be beneficial.
CAD Systems Specialist.
CAD Systems Specialist. Due to a number of issues on a major project I had a very short turn-around time to implement a full CAD build from top down. This also meant catering an upgrade for half of the group from MicroStation 2004 to V8i. To add to the issue, gaps not picked up in Client build requirements also had to be identified and issues rectified prior to drawing delivery.
Once in place, the build expanded through to all Calibre Rail groups and then into the Calibre Projects RIO group and finally into the Brisbane office. At its peak, the build was in use by over 300 drafting group members across multiple offices and states. Plans were also in place to expand its use into overseas offices planned for Mongolia.
To aid users, many of whom did NOT come from a MicroStation background, I implemented the Calibre Knowledgebase. This is created using freeware and is a chm help file which is searchable, making it much easier for users to find information on relevant subjects. It is copied locally by the CAD build and available via a button on the build interface.
Due to the different requirements both civil and rail have in build requirements, I worked extensively with our Clients so that we could work through some issues we had with Client CAD builds and our drawing delivery. This included level requirements, cells and the use of real world sheet position so we could use our custom grid placement tools and more. Having a good relationship with many of the Client build custodians, including BHPBIO, helped us gain some effective delivery changes for the Rail group.
CAD Systems Specialist –all projects - redesign and simplify existing build and fill in the gaps. This included an update from MicroStation and Structural Modeller 2004 to XM and then V8i. This also included a standardized printing tool, new plot files, reviewed Part\Families and build levels and a more user friendly GUI for custom tools. All this took place in the middle of 2 major projects which meant all projects had to be upgraded as well.
Identify existing issues with modelling processes and implement training programs and project auditing to rectify these issues.
Expanded the use of the new AECOM Bentley build to Brisbane. Travelled between Brisbane and Perth managing the CAD systems for both groups as well as training staff in the use of the newer versions of MicroStation.
SPSi. Design and implementation of Bentley design environment that included MicroStation V7, V8, XM and V8i as well as InRoads and TriForma. Design and implementation of Group Drafting Manual, Client and Project Environments as well as involvement in IT issues such as security matrix, login scripts and a custom hta front end to give all Users better access and control of the build. Liaise with project sub-consultants to deliver electronic files in the correct format in a quicker and more automated manner. Training and troubleshooting staff.
Draft and collate the list of standard drawings for both concrete and steel for SPSi.
RGP5, BHPBIO and FAST, NW Western Australia. CAD Administrator\Structural Designer. Checking and coordinating of all structural sub-consultant drawings for the project. Drafting of architectural and steelwork drawings as required. Support of Staff and maintenance of MicroStation build for the project as this project had a unique requirement with the CADconform build from BHPBIO.
Also responsible for the conversion of all sub-consultant AutoCAD drawings to MicroStation and then Conforming the drawings for issue. This was aided with the creation of custom conversion tables and vba applications to remove non-standard Styles.
