It can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store, updates are automatic and frequent.

Some of the tools are added to the Windows File Explorer, others are launched by Windows key combinations, most of which are WinKey + Shift + <character>.

The most useful tools that I have found in PowerToys are:

PowerRename

While I've used the Bulk Rename Utility for years, PowerRename offers a very clear UI for some simpler renaming operations that displays results in a nicely styled tree format. For instance, find and replace will search and display a whole file and folder structure, just right-click on a folder and pick PowerRename:

Paste As Plain Text

This uses the WinKey + Ctrl + Alt + V combination to paste copied text as unformatted. It sounds like a lot of keys, but they are three in a row plus the V so are easy to remember.

Text Extractor

WinKey + Shift + T launches a marquee, just drag this over the text that you want to copy and it is OCR'd to the clipboard:

Result: Experiences built for focus

Mouse Utilities

This contains several features

Find My Mouse: Shake the mouse or press Ctrl twice to locate the mouse with a configurable highlight, a white circle is the default.

Mouse Highlighter: This visually highlights left and right mouse click with small coloured circles, the defaults are yellow and blue. Toggled on/off by WinKey + Shift + H. Very useful when training or demonstrating to colleagues.

Mouse Jump: helpful when using multiple monitors, this shows an image of the whole screen array, click the desired point to jump there. Initiated by WinKey + Shift + D:

Fancy Zones

I left this off my list initially, then I read about using drag + Shift key. Set up the zones in the layout that you need, you can have as many as you like, different sizes too (unlike the default Windows docking options). Having done that drag a window while holding down Shift and your zones light up:

More tips on this from Microsoft here: PowerToys FancyZones utility for Windows | Microsoft Learn

What's changed in Navigator CE and what it means?

Think about upgrading from Navigator V8i to Navigator CE? You need to be aware of all these changes...

Major Changes in Navigator CE as compared to Navigator V8i:

can only open mobile i-models (.imodel)

can NOT open files directly from ProjectWise

can NOT attach ref files

can NOT create overlay files

Meaning we can NOT use the same way to work in Navigator CE as V8i!

first off, we need to convert regular i-model (.i.dgn) to mobile i-model (.imodel). You can use 'dgnV8converter.exe' delivered with MicroStation CE update 11 for the conversion

you can open mobile i-models either from local PC or Project Share Service in ProjectWise Project (formerly known as Connected Project)

because we can NOT attach ref files interactively in Navigator CE, package mobile i-models (contains all refs you need) have to be built in advance (I know it's crazy, right before design review, you find a ref is missing, now you need to rebuild the whole package i-model instead of just building the ref then attach it!)

because NO overlay files any more, all the markups\comments can only be captured in Issue Resolution Service in ProjectWise Project

Overall, ProjectWise Project becomes a prerequisite to run Navigator CE. If you are not familiar with it, better to catch up!

I am Sachin Kumar. I am using Bentley Microstation V8i ( SELECT series 10). One of my friend in my organization created a (.Dgnlib ) Library file for ( Metallurgy Levels, Equipment Boxes, Multilevel Colors ) for P&IDs Drawing. He shared that file to use for everyone. But, I am not able to attach that file in my system folder. He asked me to place that file in my system at the following path

C:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley\MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries)\MicroStation\mdlsys\required

Can You please help to resolve this issue. How can i attach that library file to my machine to use in Microstation work

Regards

Let me get one thing straight, this isn’t meant as an attack on any one group and I’m not trying to single any group out. This is just my opinion on where I think the effort and skills should come from after almost 20 years in the industry.

I’ve always had a strong opinion when it comes to CAD Administration and Management, having been in this area now for the past 10 to 15 years, that CAD Administration and IT should always been treated as 2 separate groups. When I started out drafting most of the CAD Admin work was done by the IT group with the same old attitude that has been around since the dawn of time. Log a call, expect to wait a few days and don’t suggest ways to make improvements. It’s the sort of attitude that might work fine for an IT\Help Desk group, but just doesn’t wash for Engineering Systems.

If CAD users have something that doesn’t work, then it needs to be fixed NOW. We can’t afford to wait even half a day. I can just imagine the reaction of a Project Manager when the Lead Designer says they can’t deliver drawings on time as they are waiting to CAD Support to get back to them, but to this day we still fight with Business Unit Leaders to be recognised as part of the engineering group and not another IT sub-section.

The presumption exists that all software is an issue for IT, the biggest failure with this is that we assume that CAD and Engineering software can be managed (or not) in the same way. How many firms using CAD packages fail to take full advantage of how the package can be configured to take full advantage of customisation and refined workflows? Not only that, how many IT groups do you know put the effort into beta testing CAD software and have the ability and knowledge to teach new users and long term users how to better use the software? They’re left to fend for themselves and make do.

How many firms fully utilise the customisation of the GUI to make it easier for users to find commonly used tools, custom tools or discipline based tools? This is all work a good CAD Admin group should be doing for your firm and if they aren’t, then firms should be looking for CAD Admins who can supply the training so those who look after their CAD Systems can manage things better. Other basics such as online tutorials, well written and up to date help files, administration manuals that clearly explain workflows. All of these should be part in parcel of any good CAD Admin group.

In this day and age of CAD systems, ‘Out of the Box’ should not be an acceptable state of affairs. Firms are always looking for an edge on the competition and better use of CAD systems is a good place to start. Whether it’s MTO’s, custom printing routines that take out the guess work or custom title block routines. All of these are ways in which a user’s CAD experience at your firm can be enhanced, and believe me when I say that firms who have nailed their CAD environment become a place more people want to work. Just ask users who have made the rounds who they would rather work for and why and I bet you most will remember their good CAD experiences over their bad.

Bentley Map C# Addin to establish Oracle Spatial and SQLServer connection on startup (without exposing the password)

About this C# Addin

This application (AutoDBConn) was developed to work as an add-on application on top of Bentley Map Enterprise, Bentley Map Standalone and/or Bentley Map for MicroStation V8i SS3 or higher.

The aim of this tool is to store the Database password (using cryptography) allowing you to automatically connect to an Oracle Spatial or SQL Server database, by using the MS_GEOINITCMD parameter, without exposing the password.

Note: This tool is supplied as is. These applications do not come with support. Bentley Systems Inc. and the author of these programs assume no liability for damages direct, indirect, or consequential, which may result from the use of this programs. Use this application at your own risk.

Installation

AutoDBConn.dll should be copied into the folder:

<ProgramFiles>\...Map/MapEnterprise\mdlapps\

<ProgramFiles>\...Map\Map\mdapps\

How to Create the Configuration File

To configure your connection, open any Bentley Map session and run the following KEY-IN to launch the configuration form:

Key-In: MDL LOAD AUTODBCONN; AUTODBCONN LOAD FORM

Use the buttons: New, Delete, Open or Save to manage the configuration settings file.

The configuration file is created using the XML format and can store the configuration for both Oracle Spatial or SQL Server, however, only one connection is allowed using the Map Interoperability.

How to Configure your GSA project to automatically open the connection

Open your XML project using Bentley Geospatial Administrator (or change your MS_GEOINITCMD variable).

Go to Macros section and add the following lines.

MS_GEOINITCMD = Mdl Load AutoDBConn

MS_GEOINITCMD > AutoDBConn AutoConnect [Named | Session] “ConfigurationName”

Usage: AUTODBCONN AUTOCONNECT [Options] <Configuration Name>

Options:

Named: to open named connections;

Session: to open Session connections;

Examples:

AUTODBCONN AUTOCONNECT NAMED MyNamedConnection;

AUTODBCONN AUTOCONNECT SESSION MySessionConnection;

Note: This application uses the standard GDI Map Interoperability Key-ins to connect to the database;

Have not tested on Oracle using Windows Authentication;

This version doesn’t contain resources to test database connectivity, please make sure to type the password correctly, or use copy and paste operations to ensure the password is right.

The configuration name and the path to the XML file are stored inside the HKEY_CURRENT_USER Registry Root folder.

Using the Open Configuration File operation will load the configuration into the form and also creates new registry entries.
