Infact I avoid vertical offset because I usually end up with this result.

The recent example is linear variable slope which references a centreline and projects onto a channel which gradually moves away from the centreline (i.e. not parallel).

Is there something I'm missing? Best practice? Or are these tools just temperamental. I sometimes get the same result with Project Profile to Element if I choose All points but this is resolved by choosing Vertices instead.

How to stop the selected Design Standard from dropping

Using ORD 2021R1

I have reached the point in my project where I need to tie-in the carriageway (dual carriageway, channels and lane markings, both ends of the alignment, so 20 elements which must be aligned both horizontally and vertically)

I have searched the training and the communities, and haven't been able to find anything that goes through the best way to model these tie-ins to existing, how best to measure the required existing dimensions relative to the geometry.

Nose taper using Ratio Offset Taper for length and nose ratio

Nose carriageway using Single Offset Entire Element for the carriageway width

Merge/diverge taper using Variable Offset Taper for the length and offsets

1000m radius between the Merge/Diverge taper and the mainline carriageway edge using Arc Between Elements > Simple Arc for the mainline tie-in

1000m radius between the Nose carriageway and Merge/Diverge taper elements to smooth the carriageway edge through the angle

I have found in several instances (3 out of 8 layouts in my current design), that no matter what I use for the final element, either using Arc Between Elements > Simple Arc or Arc Between Elements, or what order the elements have been selected as back and ahead, when the mainline reference is reloaded, or simply upon opening the model at the start of the day, the horizontal solution glitches, either giving the "Invalid Element. Uable to solve rule please correct element construction" error message or moving the acr to a different solution location.

The designed solution (north radius is 500m due to the mainline alignment in this situation):

Once refreshed:

The glitches can be resolved by selecting the complex and amneding the arc value to R1001m and then back to R1000m, or by dragging the arc midpoint grip, but I cannot find a way to prevent this glitch happening.

Does anyone have a similar experience and a way to prevent this happening?

Report the crossfall, distance etc. between 2 linear elements

As a previous MX user I am use to a couple of tools to be able to quickly check a crossfall, distance etc. between 2 linear elements at specific points/stations.

I suspect after doing research I know what the answer will be but is there a way to do this in ORD yet? Seems pretty fundamental and something I use to use a lot.

For clarification, I know using dynamic sections is useful for checking these things within a single corridor perpendicularly and I have also tried drawing a line in plan to project the things I'm interested in onto its profile. I am also aware of the base station crossfall report, the MicroStation measure tool (only good for distances) as well as analzye between 2 points (limited to terrains which I don't always have) but these methods are slow, limited and cumbersome. I need to be able to do it on the fly with the linear geometry of a model without relying on there being a terrain, a single corridor or running a full report just for one quick measurement.

Regards,

It's not the end of the world, I can work with the 3D element for creating the design surface, but I've not seen any other linear element not have a 2D equivalent, and I've tried multiple features.

I'm doing it this way because I can't find any way to create the interface of two slopes, or to add the construction surface to the interface point using Alternate Surface in the template editor (and there's several terrains in the model that could be listed, but there's none.

I'm trying to set up some standard ORD DWG export processes for my organization and have only found a few methods to get the outputs I require without issues that require extensive post-processing to be good enough for delivery. Plan exports are a bit convoluted to get past the issue of elements exporting with no symbology after splitting strings with gaps during export, but it gets us close to what we want - unfortunately many issues regarding annotation values changing on export. Ideally i'd love us to be using Microstation to take advantage of the native dynamics, but unfortunately our market is primarily AutoCAD for drafting.

Here's what i've come up with so far using ORD 2018 R3;

*UPDATE* - A few improvements in ORD 2018 R4 meaning less custom processes

*UPDATE* - More improvements in ORD 2021 R1 and R2

2D Alignment Plan export with Annotation - process required to export chainage annotation:

Steps:

1. Open new DGN using 2D seed

2. Reference in Default model with no nesting

3. Turn off display of unnecessary levels

4. Create Fence around data

5. Deactivate Auto Field Update using "EXPAND SET MS_AUTO_UPDATE_FIELDS = NEVER" keyin

6. Use Fence to File command to copy contents to new DGN

7. Open New DGN

8. Select all Annotation Cells (named "DrawTextAnnotation") and drop

9. Select all Text Nodes and drop (this seems to allow correct export of field values)

10. Export to DWG

11. Reactivate Auto Field Update using "EXPAND SET MS_AUTO_UPDATE_FIELDS = ALWAYS" keyin

Note: You can start the process from your live DGN Default (2D) model and skip points 1 and 2 if you don't mind changing many level display settings in your live file. We keep a DGN saved for export levels already preset.

3D DWG Plan export - process required when model includes string gaps and clipping, etc.: Normal DWG export is now resolved, although this process gives a cleaner result (WYSIWYG)

Steps:

1. Open new DGN using 3D seed (or 2D for flattened DWG)

2. Reference in Default-3D model with no nesting

3. Turn off display of unnecessary levels

4. Create Fence around data

5. Use Fence to File command to copy contents to new DGN

6. Open New DGN

4. Select all Complex Chains and drop (required to avoid dropped chains being put on layer 0 by default)

5. Export to DWG

Note: If you want a 3d DWG and don't mind changing many level display settings in your live file, you can start the process from your live DGN Default-3D model and skip points 1 and 2. We keep a DGN saved for export levels already preset.

Cross section DWG export :

Issues:

First cross section model exported has missing design elements - does this happen to anyone else?

Any Linear Annotation point name annotation is exported as "NONE"

Point name annotation is exported as "NONE" for all points when you choose to export cross sections to external/new DGNs from the Create Drawings dialog

Can take a long time to export for large models (specifically the "Merging Reference file to Model" process) Resolved in 2021 R2 (much faster model merge speed)

Issues:

3D Cut elements are not exported - 3D Cut reference requires Merge to Master in Profile view to export (becomes static CAD lines)

Profile Geometry Annotation lose values in export, eg. grade and K-value change to 0.00 in Drawing Models only (okay for Sheet Models)

Lines are exported between Profile IPs on Layer 0

I can select them and reset to continue, but it doesn't rebuild or add to the corridor. I've deleted the matchlines and made new ones, I deleted ALL the corridor references and added them again and these in particular won't add. They're in the same template drop where a matchline right next to it is working...

I did have these intersections as civil cells and clipped the corridor (and since hand built the intersections and deleted the clipping) but not sure if this affects it in any way.

Also my corridor and intersections are in separate files, again not sure if it affects anything.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Element Profile by slope from element

ORD 2021R1 Update 1 (10.10.01.03)

I'm having an issue with element profiles, in this case projecting to the offside edge of a diverge nose (highlighted).

The mainline channel is profiled using 0% from the corridor element, its profile is on the left, and is as expected

The nose profile is created at -2.5% from the mainline channel using Profile By Slope From Element, but gives steps and bumps as can be seen on the left profile.

These irregularities are not present in the geometry, the superelevation, the profiles of the corridor elements, or the duplicate element of the mainline channel, so where are they coming from and how can I remove them?
