I am an honour student at Australian Maritime College, currently conducting research on ship motion at zero speed beam seas.

I was playing around with analysis using panel method, and was trying to get a roll decay simulation result from my model. The roll decay seemed to be off as there wasnt really oscillation (the initial value was 30 degrees and it went straight to 0 degrees and stayed at 0 degrees throughout). I thought this means that my model did not have any damping factors as I also obtained significantly large Roll RAO from my panel method comparing to the Linear strip theory result. That being said, when running my panel method analysis, I did not input any roll damping matrix which was one of the options under the analysis tab. Has anyone got an idea on how to calculate and how to use this damping matrix? or if anyone has any other advices on this case, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

That's why it's important to ensure that your capstone project is carefully planned, well-executed, and thoroughly documented. If you're looking for advice on how to do that, check out this blog post!

Assuming you have already been accepted into a capstone program, the first step is to choose your topic. If you haven't been given a list of options, now is the time to come up with something that interests you. Narrow down your topic so that it can be manageable in the time frame you have been given. Once you have chosen your topic, the next step is finding a faculty member to oversee your project.

Some programs will assign you a faculty member, but if you can choose, pick someone whose area of expertise aligns with your project topic. Once you have found a supervisor, meet with them to discuss your project plans. This is also an excellent time to start thinking about what resources (books, articles, etc.) you will need for your research.

Now it's time to start working on your proposal. This document outlines the goals of your project and how you plan to achieve them. It should be around ten pages long and include a literature review of previous work in your chosen field. Your supervisor and the capstone committee must approve your proposal before you can begin collecting data or working on your project.

Benefits of Taking on a Capstone Project

There are many benefits to taking on a capstone project. For one, it can help you develop new skills and knowledge in your field. It can also allow you to apply what you've learned in the classroom to a real-world setting.

In addition, working on a capstone project can help you network with professionals in your field and make industry contacts. And if you choose to pursue a career in academia, completing a capstone project can give you an edge when applying to graduate programs.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Creating a Capstone Project

Students make a few common mistakes when creating their capstone projects. Here are a few to avoid:

Not Defining the Problem Clearly

The first step to any good project is to define the problem you are trying to solve. This seems like a no-brainer, but students often try to tackle too broad of a problem or don't get specific enough. It is important to narrow your focus to create a well-defined and achievable project.

Not Doing Your Research

Before you start working on your project, it is essential to do your research. This will help you better understand the problem you are trying to solve and give you direction on how to solve it. Not doing your research can lead to wasted time and effort spent on something that may not even be possible to solve.

Biting Off More Than You Can Chew

It is important to scope your project to be achievable within your time frame. Doing too much will only lead to frustration and a subpar project. Be realistic about what you can accomplish, and don't try to take on more than you can handle.

Conclusion

After reading this guide, you should better understand a capstone project and how to prepare for one. Remember to start planning early, give yourself plenty of time to research and write, and don't be afraid to ask for help from your instructor or classmates. Proper preparation can make your capstone project a successful and rewarding experience.
