The idea is fantastic, yet I've a suggestion for improvement. (I'm doing so here because I'm not testing over latest beta and while I've been invited to the beta discusion forum I think its more fair to expose here just in case its already iplemented (doubt)).

For SELF ATTACHMENTS, when you choose "merge to cell", when you open elsewhere, the reference data is under a hyerarchy node that hast the name of the .dgn. That would be ok if it was an EXTERNAL reference, but since it is a SELF ATTACHMENT, the name of the dgn as root of hyerarchy provides no proper info of the data contained in under that node, it should be the MODEL NAME as root node name instead of .dgn name.

A messy workaround (requires unloading current cell lib or using cell selector) for this situation is to attach the design model as Cell, in that case the naming is properly set based on the description:

Image: original .dgn name is "329_showa_shell_3D", by opening "329.showa_(...)_aligned.dwg" which contains self attachment of other motherl in same .ccgn, when opened in another 3d package you can see the same model data under two different yerarchy nodes names, the one OK is the "(...)_main_sign)", naming comes from the model places as cell.

Hello.

I had been some years without doing much Microstation until recently where I had to go back again full gas into it. This report is written on Select Series and some stuff may have been fixed on the Connect. Yet, the time I tested on connect several things where still glitched.

This time I've been doing mostly 3d mesh modelling, so I may have forgotten other issues not so tied to this topic.

CELLS

***When creating a cell, the original entities in design space do not become the created cell, the cell is just generated in library, how annoying is that!
***SUPER IMPORTANT ---> Cells can not be edited in context!! This is incredibly annoying and limiting, should be editdable as when "activate" and external ref. This was and it is the major drawback from AutoCad I found when migrated. Basically the only 2 things MS is worse than ACAD are in place cell editing and paper space preparation.

***3dcell placement is very raw, should be so that up axis is always up and not allways placed as top view despite the view could be in not top view.
***If you update a 3d cell that contains meshes that have been mirrored, the normals are flipped and the color itself is darker, in short feels messed up.
***If you update a cell globally, if cell is part of a group, it does not update.(!!)
***If you update a cell globally during a display set, all the cells make into the display set.
***renamed cells can not be updated globally, replace is needed.
***editing cells in the .cel archive is a nightmare, microstation becomes extremelly slopy. EDIT: unconfirmed but I think its slopy only when "open for editing", if you open .cel directly seems to work ok!

***Nested cells are managed in an ankward fashion. Lets say cell_B is an small cell containing a 3d nut. If we place severall cell_B and pack everythin in a new cell named cell_A. WHen opening for editing Cell_A, all cell_B instances are not shown as a cell but as the object type they're, like a 3d mesh, its not just htat but they can´t be moved nor deleted. If back into the original design if we place cell_A and we drop it, then yes the nuts are represented as cell_B. When editing cell_A, cell_B instances should be kept as cells, and should be editable, wether moveable or delete-able.
In addition, when editing cell_A if whe self attach the cell library and we do insert cell_B nuts ino the design space, they're kept as cell entities, even in future edits of the .cel file, allowing for moving the nested cell aswell as deleting, which should be the behaviour in any case.

EDIT: I just noticed that the nested cells are treated as attachments on .cel file. ok now I can move or delete theese. :D Still its a bit rigid as compared to moving rotating a regular/cell

3D view navigation
***rotate about/center view on selected element without having to manually set rotation point, other programs do this on a simple key press
***There is no proper WASD mouse fly trought / inspection, we're in 2020!!!!!
***Rotate around gizmo is bugged when "activate" on reference. This defeats all the good of activating a 3d reference. You can not modify the rotation gizmo. Also if you zoom out it kind of goes nowhere and content is lost. --> briefly you barely can edit an activated 3d reference. This is extremelly annoying.

update-->suprisingly, when dealing with self attachments like attaching another model from the same file, the gizmo can be moved without issues, properly snapping to active reference geometry

3D modelling
***surface by extrusion along will not work if path is on an external reference even if "keep path" is checked
***"solid by thicken surface" should require an snap point to do the extrusion when "thickness" is not set beforehand, this is because without snap point ressults are not accurate unless you lock to an acudraw axe. the similar "surface by extrusion" does it right.
***"solid by thicken surface" has no option to place created element into active layer/properties

***no material assign to selected faces
***no detach selected faces (added later on Connect I believe, but with poor face selection tools)
***"facet smoothing" should be aplicable also to only a selected set of faces
***no backfacecull view mode (really needed for realtime exports)
***acudraw 3d rotations--> you can not lock a plane for 3d rotations and get a virtual reference point as target without the lock plane unlocking. Forces to create auxiliary geometry. I believe this has to be a bug since virtual lines are rendered during rotation process.

***if 2 meshes of different wire color are merged, each color is kept and level color is ignored even if forced to override by manually set color by level.
if this is to be considered to somehow be a "feature" it should be exploitable as with detach by wire color or similar.

***no selection at vertex level for more than one vertex. If drag tool is meant to do so, drag tool is a complete mess. Something similar to "editmesh"editpoly" from 3dmax is needed.

***intersection snap is needed, computing intersection as a tool itself for extending a line till a surface is an overkill. the trick I do is that if surface is aligned with any predefined view I switch to it and snaps do work but usually that is not the case

***no uv map editor--> basic editor should be, basic uvmapping projections flatten, box mapping, relax etc, packing...(considering how many other things need to be fixed this fall into nice to have category)

CONNECT
***Its annoying that task hotkeys do change between Descartes v8i etc. for instance measure D1, M1, F1...

***UI takes more vertical space even with ribbon minimized, everything feels bulkier.

***Allow to COMPLETELLY HIDE ribbon and enable menu like in V8i please please please. and keep the tasks.
***Snap icons looks absolutelly horrible, WTH is that, Microstation for DOS?!

MISC

***PDF is allowed to attach as "reference" but they won´t be displayed. They need to be attached as raster vector or img.

***dropping cell in display set removes elements from display set, and does not leave them selected so you can bring them back with "add" command,
in a similar fashion droping a group removes elements from display set, at least theese are left selected and can be brought back, yet...

above feature has been added in Connect, tested in update 14

***with several isolated linestrings, when dropping any, makes it dissapear from the displayset.

above feature has been added in Connect, tested in update 14

***uniformity on attached file rewiring:
Raster--->right click-->file name-->Click on Magnifying icon
Attachment-->double click--->Click on "Browse"but (this is the good way as its faster)

***Rotate-->Method-->Active Angle, when doing this operation in 3D the axis of reference is the last one used with the accudraw. Tool should allow to modify this on the fly. "rotate reference" has X Y Z inputs, it could be a good way to implement, also rotate and rotate reference could be same method as having to run the rotate method form the "reference manager" its not the most convenient thing. You could lock attachment transformations with a property to avoid accidental transforms. Pretty much what raster attachment already allow.

***In the reference manager, a self attachment of a different model than current, if model space changes name it does not update in the reference manager, at least not in the same session, have not checked on restart. There should be a callback and should auto update.

***If model space name is changed from a model that has not it referenced, once going to a model with that namechanged model space reference, the reference is broken. This should not be name based but internally with autoid tied.

***Reference manager shows XYZ offsets for position but only one Rotation value, why not XYZ rotation? same option should be for scale.

***In an reference that has nested references. If you enable the root reference for editing from another drawing where it is attached, it does not allow to move/transform the nested references.
Example I've a 3d composition of a bridge, composition is made out of attachment of other files. If I attach the composition of the bridge I can not move the parts from the drawing I'm attaching the bridge composition even if I "activate" the composition reference.

above feature has been added in Connect, tested in update 14

***Selected reference in model space is not highlighted as selection in the Reference Manager. unlike happens with rasters.

***It would be usefull if without being in a displayset we could hide the selected objects as if in displayset with --Dispplayset-->Remove -- the remove event would create a displayset itself with the rest of the active elements, should be easy to implement and would be very handy.

** from the past experiences, paper space windows setup is a nightmare, its one of the few things Autocad does it better. Please implement like Autocad or at least give option to be like in there. A hole that its a windows to design space, rather than attaching whole design space and clipping.

***pasting a picture from the clipboard when pasting its pasted in a horrible quality, 8 bit 1980 like quality

I hope this helps to improve the tool, tbh I've lost connection with this software since connect due to the wall built because of the radical UI swap. The only that allowed me to test it properly was enablitn the task and the searchbox that allow me to search the tools, lucky I know them all by name. NEw ui leave little room for exploring tools, its too rigid, aka "smart".

May i convert PDF document of P&IDs into the Microstation format

I have PDF copy of Markup P&IDs which contains a lot of information in terms of Metallurgy mapping and many data added into the PDF files.
The Facet Curve tool is inadequate. There doesn't seem to be a way to have the degree of curvature be the factor which sets the line segment length. For example, say I have 50 arcs, all with a radius of 100 ft, which vary in length from 10 ft long to 500 ft long. It is inefficient treat these 50 variable length arcs one at a time using the Facet Curve tool and manually selecting the number of segments every time. If you try to do them all at once, at maybe a number of 100, your 500 ft long arcs would work out well resulting in 5 ft long line segments, but your 10 ft long arcs would be ridiculous with a new line every 0.1 ft.

I thought maybe there was an answer in dropping the linestyle, but in order to do that the line would have to have breaks instead of being continuous. I tried converting to a dashed line, then dropping the linestyle. But when I tried to reconnect all the line segments, I could not find an efficient way to do that either.

Please assist. Thanks.

[TUTORIAL / TIP ] Alternative to cross section tool

I recently posted about the cross section tool, has very big limitations and is only usable for perfectly straight elements lik a bridge.

https://communities.bentley.com/products/3d_imaging_and_point_cloud_software/f/contextcapture-descartes-pointools-forum/147179/model-by-section-needs-improvement

I've came across an approach to workaround the limitations of that tool.

If our dataset has vegetation you will probably whant to run classification first so you run following steps on a ground+road visible points dataset.

You will first need to extract road axis or a line that is paralell to the axis. In a 2 lane road that is pretty easy with the follow line tool. I'm not detailing this step here.

You could alternativelly drape a cartography axis, cleanup, facet, convert to spline and facet back.

We've the centerline extracted so we draw at start of it a line, perpendicular to it, this line will have the span of the cross section we shant to have, center it to the axis line.

Then using the array tool we will clone this section by distance, for this example I did clone each 5m. Enable "rotate" checkbox, this will orient cross section with road axis.

The array follow the axis in z too. This is important for later on.

You can adjust the lenght of specific cross sections to cover aditional cloud areas if needed.

In the Descartes attach cloud panel, there is a tool called "Drape element" This will project a line over the point cloud. Dissable generalization and try first the parameters with a couple of lines. There is a height parameters that seems to define the distance within the line and cloud are so if line to drape was in 0 and cloud at +50 and distance 10 (default) wont project, but as the array places lines following the axis, default value works just fine. After projecting all the cross section at once (takes 2-3 mins) you may see some spikes in the data, in my case the biggest ones where at the very center of the cross section, after a cleanup of 5 mins remove the biggest spikes.

Some terrible spikes in the centerline:

You may at this point extract cross sections by selecting one of theese or extract linear features following cross sections.

It does also help in understanding the cloud details, as many times specially in the sides where density is lower understanding shapes needs for the camera to orbit.

I'll try to fine tune params as there are some IMO unjustified spikes. This is why it is not a good idea to run line decimation when projecting as it will decimate over a non perfectly adjusted line. To avoid those spike what I would do internally is to mesh the cloud with Delaunay XY plane like in Cloud Compare. And project over that mesh but from the bottom, not the top. Even I did use view projection from bottom theese spike presist. But with the meshing those should be avoided. I would import that mesh into MS and use the legay mesh line drape but MS does not handle well hi-poly meshes :\ It does a terrible job in fact.

Hope you all enjoyed and that is is usefull for you.

[EDIT] checking on teh side spikes issue. Theese are due to vegetation still present. Tested the heigh param aand is the distance from the line to che cloud that will be considered for projection, so if you've vegetation avobe it will pick those points.

I tested, is very cool but has a pretty big limitation that makes the tool close to unusable.

This section tool in combination with the follow line tool would make an awesome tandem.

Been testing the cloud capabilities of Descartes and overall are great but found the line extraction to fail a bit too much when extracting alphalt limit lines on a mountain overpass. The centerline extraction was a breeze because its very clean. So using the centerline as a path for the cross section tool and be able to advance n meters with the hit of a keyboard key would make the tool waaay much more usable.

Actually you've to surf back with the cursor to the cross section panel and click to advance and the most cumbersome part is that you need to eyeball how much degrees you whant to turn the view.

Having the centerline as a path you could convert to spline by points first so that the tool can extract the tangent at each position and simply keep moving on at the hit of a key. As a helper, option for bringing the previously drawn section snaped to mouse curssor as a temporary block as when you attach a reference in interactive mode, would allow to have a draft you may initially place as bet fit and simply move needed vertex to fully fit.

I can submit the mobile scan data for testing purposes if you pople whant it. (with the breaklines I've extracted and such)

Descartes point cloud edit classification tool needs impprovements

The tool itself works great and is very handy for retouching but needs a bit more powerfull tools for selection.

I felt a bit let down when the "Shape" mode prompts you to input manually points and there is no option to pick an existing shape in the model.

I wanted to separate the asphalt form the rest of the terrain and I had a shape built based on the roadlines and if I could have used it it would have be a 1 click operation.

Aditionally the shape could have a heigh value so it acts like an extruded volume, similar to the slab. This would avoid picking points from elements such streetlights etc....

Import KML option in MicroStation

We have seen the capability of MicroStation V8 to export vector data to Google earth Kml/Kmz files. We have also explored an option to import Image from Google earth.

I would like to know if there is an import option available to seamless bring in the vector (KML) layers from google earth directly into Microstation/Bentley map environment.

This functionality would definitely complete the worflow lifecycle in an Integrated Mapping-Google Earth Environment.

The line following tool is cool, works perfectly with centerline on a 2 lane road.

Does not work that cool with side lines as intensiti variation in this scan is not that obvious. In the other hand yes it is much obvious in terms of colour so aside of intensity being able to isolate by colour would be very handy.

Pointools, some coments on stuff I'm going trough as new user.

Hi.

Been testing pointools.

Pros--> Can handle really big datasets, uploaded a 780M point cloud and handles it really well, but. you cant do much with it aside from doing a video.

I find overall pointools feels like half baked biscuit.

Stuff:

SELECTION

Selection is probably one of the most important aspects when dealing with clouds, PT has some weird behaviours in there.

If you select Ball brush mode, you may whant to have some Constraints so you go to Constraints tab and you setup a color match contrain using the color picker. WHen you use the color picker if the brush size gizmo is not minimal size it will pick up the cyan color of the gyzmo. Really annoying. Yo'll need to reduce the size of the ballbrush gizmo and do the pick up operation. Obviously the gizmo should be non existing to this tool but it probably performs a color pick on the final rendered image. Thisis IMO a MUST be fixed.

Similar annoying bug is that when trying to Contraint using intensity match, when you click the Pick button you would spect that after clicking a point you would get the points intensity value set into teh stiler and you dont, you've to after clikcing the point bo tack to Pick button and click and at that point is where the value is set on slider.

On the select points tab, retangle polygon.... when you choose Cloud. All points are selected even if Deselect is sselected in Select Mode tab. Really annoying.

There should be a cloud alike SelectPoints tool where you perform a selection using the active constraints because as it is now the constraints are only applyed on small regions or you've to set a massive brush but if you set a massive brush when using the picker you pick the brush gizmo values. So, basically it feels broken.

Selection and segmentation into layers is something Pointools should be doing like a pro and its failing, I'm not asking more to the software, if you whant to further process the cloud CC would do a nice job but you may whant to segment the data into multiple sub clouds prior to going to MS of CC to work on a cleaner data than the whole scan.

Some feature I miss on the selection side.

Time is not a value that is visible available when performing selections, sadly, having it would help cleaning up mobile mapping scans as sometimes dual lane roads get scanned twice and side points of the scann fall into the oposite lane creating some noisy waves that would be very easy to clean if constrainign teh view to an specifc time as CC allow to do.

Something I love from CC is that allows to visualize an specific scalar field (so far PT is RGB or Intensity and thats it), and from that SF you can constrain values using a scale bar. In CC it will force you to segment the cloud using that constrained values if you whant to edit further, if PT was able to constrain the rendered points temporally using a similar scale bar and allow selection/cleanup operations on that rendered set of points would be very handly for cleanups. Also CC performs the constraint in real time something I miss in PT.

COLORING:

In regards to coloring, PT has some cool tools but I miss a Clone Stamp tool as picking and using the brush usually feels like a cheap cleanup.

The very perfect solution would be something like in photoshop that allows you to select a region and you fill it using "context aware" option and seamlessly.

Thats it, some basic stuff where PT should excell in order to be able to export clean, segmented clouds into MS or other soft as CC if ruther editing is needed.

Hope they manage to add into MS the capability of rendering points so smoothly as at this point Connect does not perform nowhere as goot as PT into cloud rendering.

Navigation in PT is not fantastic either a WASD + mouse orbit could be helpfull.

I recently saw a post where you could colorize a point cloud draping raster color. I just tested but it seems MS does not internally recognize the cloud as a colorized cloud because when exportin does not have the color cannel option available.

I just tested to import a coloured mobile mapping las and exported taht same cloud and in Channels, unlike with the colorized cloud yes does show Color field with the option of inclouding it or not.

So, I guess, for now there is no way to export a colorized cloud that has been colorized inside MS, right?
