Create a Shape 'Area' & 'Length' Item Type

This is my first time in trying to create an Item Type. It is simple in its complexity. I want to assign a 'name', a 'area', and a 'length' to a shape. All in MicroStation CONNECT Update 17.

I created the Item Type, as shown in the image (below).

For The Area...
Type=Number
Units=acres [acres]
Expression=this.GetElement().Area

For The Length...
Type=Number
Units=ft (US Survey) [foot (US Survey)]
Expression=this.GetElement().length

I then assigned ('Attach Item' tool) the Item Type to the sample shape element.

However, the "Label_DA" information does not reflect the values of the sample shape, as shown further up in the Properties dialog.

I'm not sure what I am doing wrong.

[CONNECT] Applying an Element Template to a SHP Reference File

I have done this task, "Applying an Element Template to a SHP Reference File", in the older V8i edition. However, I cannot get it to work in CONNECT.

Here is screen capture of my current MIcroStation session.

Element Templates are created. 'ZAI22SLP' is the blue line (drawing with the Place Line tool). 'YIA' is the green line (drawing with the Place Line tool). So, this proved the Element Templates are working as expected. However, when the same Element Templates are applied to the Reference Attachments, they do not apply the symbology settings. The dots (hard to see in the image as shown in this post) should be blue (ZAI22SLP) and the curved line should be green (YIA). Save Settings and restarting has no effect.

Any ideas?

I have just spent the last 2 hours trying to insert a very very very standardly formatted excel table - just some text and bordered cells - not very big either.

Admittedly, this is the first time I have tried this, using CONNECT and its vaunted "Place Table" tool (using the 'From File' option). I guess when I started this I thought it would be pretty straight forward. My fault for making that assumption.

What I wanted was to just insert my relatively straight forward excel table on to my design plane and have it look like the one in my spreadsheet.

Good day

I'm trying to figure out how to use the Place Table tool in MicroStaion/ OpenRoads Designer CONNECT Edition. We have a very standard format for some of our data and would like tables to be created exactly as they are in Excel.

Below is how the data looks in Excel:

Below is what it looks like if MicroStation attempts to preserve the formatting:

You can see that most of the text does not come through and not all of the row heights are preserved. The column widths are preserved.

Am I missing something?

PDF's With Transparent Elements Creates Long Print Times

We are using the Bentley PDF Print Driver to create PDF files of our project sheets. The driver is modified, some what; limited to form sizes, color settings, and PDF resolution to 300,300.

We set our cross section sheets with a transparency 30 and priority of -100 on the minor grid lines. This has an effect of diming them down and setting them behind the cross section road elements. The sheets look better.

However, each cross sheet (page) within the plan set PDF file, takes a long time to print. (Bluebeam to printer.)

To test this, the transparency (on all the minor grid lines) was changed back to 0 (zero). The same sheets printed rather quickly. [Certainly did not sit an watch a slow moving progress bar for each and every sheet.] So it is apparent that adding a extensive amount of transparent elements (minor grid lines on a cross section sheet, for example) adds a large amount of print time - each and every time the PDF is to be printed.

I guess I don't see why transparent elements adds so much print time.

My questions... Has this been true for anyone else? Do I have to look at some other method (pen tables, etc.) to get the desired effect.

This printing is being done from MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 3) = 08.11.09.832.

'Web downloads' going away?

This seems a highly regressive move. I find it hard to believe that I'm the only admin out there who has come to pathologically hate the javascript-heavy, slow 'new' Bentley website sections (especially for Bentley LEARN) by this stage. Select Option, Wait for refresh (make tea), Select New Option and so on.

The 'Software Downloads' alternative is quite difficult to navigate to find what you're looking for. In addition, even functionality such as the 'starting points' (view all CONNECT downloads, etc.) simply doesn't do what it says on the tin.

What is the best way to create a custom cell library?

I want to create a custom cell library, that contains the most commonly used cells. This will save a ton of time, and make it so all of our drafters don't have to search through the hundreds of cells that we use for every client. So what is the best way to do this?

[V8i SS2 08.11.07.443] Capture Google Earth Image

I'm having trouble importing Google Earth aerials. I followed these instructions, but I must be missing a step:

Define a Geographic Coordinate System in Microstation (I'm using IN83-WF, Indiana State Planes Western Zone)
Set the coordinate system to the active view in the Auxiliary Coordinates menu
Set the Running Coordiantes to ACS Position
Click the Capture Google Earth Image button on the Geographic Toolbar. Microstation says "Enter datapoint to capture the current Google Earth image", I click on the screen...but nothing happens. (I have Google Earth Pro open in the background and zoomed to the same coordinates)

My OS is Windows 7 Professional

Any advice would be greatly appriciated. Thank you.

Display Active Project PCF While a CADD File is Open

I was looking at 'Text Fields' and hoping that I could use a customized Field to display the current session's Project (PCF File). The objective here is to display on the CADD file (with an automatically updating Field) the current workspace, within the border model/file. My desire it to have it "displace" in real-time rather than just as a dialog popup when the file is opened.

We have several customized and heavily used workspaces. Users are not necessarily checking to see if they loaded the correct workspace, when they open a CADD file. (I have fallen victim to this myself from time-to-time.) This is not a full proof solution... But it is closer. At least with this kind of mechanism, they can look and see (on the design plane / within the border) their "current" Project PCF (workspace). To be honest, I don't even want users to edit a Tag or Text, when they create a new border. This will static in natural and will not display the active session, in later CADD file edits.

Is this even possible? If not is there another way I can set this up?
