It's quite brutal to try to move through training when 75% of the time is spent waiting for a list to load. This is not an exaggeration. Total tutorial times are shown can be done in a few hours but will take all day because of watching the list of videos page to load. With technology today, and what I have seen from other software training sites, there has to be another way to make this more user friendly.

Just beginning with launching the video in another tab vs the same tab and losing the list of videos that you just spent 5 minutes to watch load.

Trust me, I already tried opening a second browser to start the list loading while watching a video. The lists of videos never load while the other browser already running.

I saw another user post "how does Bentley expect people to use this?" I agree. The efficiency is so low that it is truly seen as a waste of time, my group does not want to use it and we cant spend that much time away from projects. I would go so far as calling it a risk by this incredible wait time and risking the video not even cover what you need.

Is Bentley having any conversations about the issues with Bentley Learn Server taking forever to load just the list of videos? I'm sure it would be used more if it wasn't an unnecessary time hog.

Thanks.

How to create shape / associative region with pattern or hatch "without" border?

In a few of our drawings I've found nice graphics I would like to reproduce in new drawings.
It involves areas with hatching / Pattern, nothing magnificent but in a nice way to represent it.

I would like to indicate surfaces by shading, but without to hatche the whole surface.
I want to fill only a small section and what I like here is that this hatched area has no dedicated frame.
This is a great way to indicate surfaces.

How does this work?

I have played around a lot without success.

The only way, but without the same result was:
- create a shape
- hatch the shape (associative pattern not enabled)
- delete the shape
- group the hatch lines

However I would create a hatches surface as "Associative Region without frame".
See the right shading on this picture and the attached sample file.

For a special reason, I would like to draw a site plan in a 3D DGN instead of a 2D DGN, to be able to use the "elevation" element property.
Normally we would draw this type of drawing in 2D, but in this case, I want to build this plan up in different "layers".
That means, each floor on a different elevation (Z-axis height).
I was very pleased when I discovered the elevation property.... and thought that would be a great help to make my work easier.
Unfortunately, however, I can't handle this elevation property.

It starts with the fact that there are differences between the V8iSS4 and the Connect Edition Update14, which I both use.
In the V8iSS4, the elevation is displayed for certain objects in the property window, but the elevation values cannot be changed.

The other way, in the Connect Edition, I can change the elevation values with the "Set Element Elevation" tool, but I don't know how to display this value for elements ....
In the Connect Edition, the point for the element elevation is missing...., this property can not be shown.

I'm very confused about the elevation property and would be happy if you could help.

1) Why does (in MSV8iSS4) the elevation property not exist for all type of elements?
For example, if I draw a shape, the "elevation" property is shown in the property windows. But if I draw a simple line, it didn´t have.

2) Why can I no longer see the elevation values in the property window in the Connect Edition?
How can I display these values?

One optional question :)
3) Is it possible to select elements at a specific elevation?

I add 4 screen shots, with the difference between MSV8iSS4 and Connect Edition Update 14.

Many Thanks
Regards
Raphael

Some questions about display resolution and a configuration for a new workstation.

I'm going to configure a new workstation, consisting of a DELL Workstation "T5810" and 4 Dell UltraSharp displays.

I mainly work with MicroStation V8i SS3, much in 2D and some 3D graphics.

Additional to this, I also use EPLAN for electrical schematics, usual Office programs and databases.

OS is 64bit Windows7.

I would not risk a bad buy, so I would like to have a few opinions…..

CONFIGURATION FOR NEW WORKSTATION:

- Processor: Intel Xeon E5-1630 v3 (4 cores, 3.7 GHz, 10 MB)

- RAM: 32 GB 2133 MHz DDR4 (4x8 GB) RDIMM ECC

- Graphic Card: AMD FirePro W5100, 4 GB, 4 DP

- Power Supply 825W

- Hard disk: SATA 3.5 "500GB 7200

Is this configuration ok?

Enough memory?

Graphics card recommended? Enough memory and enough power for my 4 monitors in a suitable resolution?

Would maybe the installation of a SSD hard drive be recommended?

DISPLAYS:

Currently I am working on following displays:

2x DELL U2311H, 23 ", 16: 9, pixel pitch of 0,265mm, resolution 1920x1080 at 60 Hz,

1x DELL 2007FP, 20 ", 4: 3, pixel pitch of 0.255mm, resolution 1600x1200 at 60 Hz,

The 23 " 16: 9 has not made me really happy because of the lack of height compared to my old 21" 4: 3 displays.

Therefore actually I only want to buy 16:10 displays…….

Since with increasing size this problem seems to disappear and I also have found interesting 16:9 devices, I am not sure what the best is
and need your experience and decision support.

I am also very uncertain about the display resolution. What is good or perhaps a no-go ...?

Maximum working distance to the screens is approximately 90cm!

MY SELECTION FOR NEW DISPLAYS:

DELL U2415, IPS panel, 24 ", 16:10, pixel pitch of 0.27mm, resolution 1920x1200 at 60 Hz

DELL U2515H, IPS panel, 25 ", 16: 9, pixel pitch of 0.216mm, resolution 2560x1440 at 60 Hz

DELL U2717D, IPS panel, 27 ", 16: 9, pixel pitch of 0.2331mm, resolution 2560x1440 at 60 Hz

Since 27” perhaps could be a little too much, or is this just a matter of habit ... :)), I actually like 25" quite well. Unfortunately, this is again a 16: 9 format!

Unusually for the 25 "is the high resolution of 2560x1440, which usually found only on 27" displays!!

How does this relate in Microstation?

Is this high resolution rather better for displaying and working on the screen?

How does Microstation run on a 25” display with that higher resolution?

In summary:

- What screen size, by using 4 displays and 90cm working distance, would be good / the best ? 24 ", 25", 27 "...?

- What format should be the best for CAD, 16:9 or 16:10, or depending on the display size ...?

- What is the best resolution, what is advantageous and what an absolute no-go?

Thanks for reading to the end .... :)) and for any help.

On the picture attached an overview of the different sizes and formats, with my current 23” 16:9 display shown in red.

Regards

For V8 version I found following posts, about how to backup and restore a microstation configuration to a new PC:

https://communities.bentley.com/products/microstation/w/microstation__wiki/8739/how-to-copy-user-preferences-and-user-configuration-files-to-a-new-or-different-pc
https://communities.bentley.com/products/microstation/w/microstation__wiki/8773/how-to-back-up-and-restore-user-preferences

Is there somewhere for the connect edition a guide which explains the best way on how to move to a new PC, with the need of reconfiguration as few as possible?

Despite intensive search, I could not find any information about it.
Many thanks

Microstation Connect - Rename personal.upf and personal.ucf

Hi,

I just switched from V8i to Connect and would have a few questions, also among to a comment in the following text (hope I can link this here?):
https://envisioncad.com/microstation-connect-ucf-and-pcf-files/

- In the Connect Edition, the UPF and the UCF are now bound to the Microstation user and are called personal.upf and personal.ucf by default.
I read in the linked text above, that there is still a configuration variable for the UPF file, but it wouldn't work and you shouldn't use it either ..... !?

Is that correct?

I would like, as in the past, to rename all of my personalized configuration files with my initials.
E.g .: XY_UserPref.UPF and XY_UserConf.UCF
I also found the variable for the UPF and was able to test it successfully. It seems to work for the UPF.

- What about user-related UCF?
How would I have to proceed to rename it? Is that even possible?

In msconfig.cfg (which we shouldn't touch) I found:

# ------------------------------------------------- ---------------------
# The names of the user preference (.upf) and user configuration (.ucf) files,
# which are stored in the $ (_ USTN_HOMEPREFS) directory, are determined by _USTN_USERNAME.
# ------------------------------------------------- --------------------
_USTN_USERNAME: Personal
_USTN_PREFNAMEBASE: $ (_ USTN_HOMEPREFS) $ (_ USTN_USERNAME)
# ------------------------------------------------- --------------------

That means that the UPF and UCF always get this fixed name "Personal" via this variable ....
But I still haven´t understood, how Microstation controll which UCF file has to be loaded, in order to refer to a renamed file.

Please, can someone explain this?

I would be happy if you could explain what the statement in the text linked above is based on and whether my plan for renaming this files is possible.

Thanks a lot
Regards
Raphael

How to change the element class of text by batch processing or macro?

Hi,
I try to change a couple of texts an data fields by batch processing and if possible also change the element class for these texts from construction to primary.
If it could be important to know, the texts are grouped!

Changing text and data fields works well with this batch command:

MDL SILENTLOAD FINDREPLACETEXT,CHNGTXT CHANGE DIALOGTEXT

FIND DIALOG SEARCHSTRING [old text]
FIND DIALOG REPLACESTRING [new text]
CHANGE TEXT ALLFILTERED

but I could not change the class in any way... :(

Is there a possibility to to that?

I tried also to do it by a macro.
The rename part works well again, but not the part for the element class :(

The additional code (red) for the class changing seems not to work

Referring to my post here:

communities.bentley.com/.../view-independent-fill

regarding the permanent filling of surfaces, I come to the programmers forum and ask for help.
Jon has already posted a few variables, which let me hoping that my intention should be possible.

I want to fill areas with a permanent fill, but I do not know how that works exactly.
The suggested MDL and VBA solution ...., is that a macro to set up the basic settings for the fill to "permanent", so that all new created filled shapes will automatically be filled permanently?
Or does it only work in a way to create elements (filled shapes) also with the macro?
Or is it possible to select a non permanent filled shape and running a macro to set it to permanent fill?

I really have no idea how this should work :(

I would be very glad if someone could explain to me how permanent surfaces can be generated.

Thanks
Regards
Raphael

Delete binding of Textstyle on placed texts

Hello,

I wonder if there's a way to use key-in or macro to delete bindings between text styles and placed text.

I want to delete only the binding of a placed text and not changing the attributes.

That means, after placing a text by using a textstyle named "CONSOLAS 0.2 CC" with the attributes font = consolas / height&width = 0.2 / justification = center-center, I want to set the used text style attribute for this texts to "none", without changing the attributes to the active attributes of the "none" text style.

The purpose is to make texts independent of the previously used text styles.

This actually is good feature and looking how to manually add such kind of independent fill for other elements. For example cells in cell library preview do not show fill so this would allows to show filled shapes in cell library preview.communities.bentley.com/.../drop_2D00_text_2D00_fill.dgn
