When using Openroads Designer, how to bring back side toolbar just like Power Civil?

Could Openroads Designer display side toolbar just like Power Civil? I am not quite familiar with the ribbon interface on ORD, so I want to change back to side toolbar just like what Power Civil looks. See below picture. Some of our customers have the same question.

I searched similar questions, and found that V8i style Tasks could be displayed in MicroStation CONNECT Edition using the configuration variable MS TASKNAVIGATION CONFIGURATION.

And I tried this method on ORD but it did not work. Maybe there is other configuration variable that we could change in order to solve this problem?

Alternative approach to Corridor/Template Design - 3D Linear Method

Fellow Engineers, Modelers, Bentley Operators, etc.

Last year in July 2017 at the 9th International Visualization In Transportation Symposium I presented an abstract detailed an alternative approach to working with Corridor/template design.

This approach is called "3D Linear Method". It is the complete opposite on what Bentley encourages in their teaching workshops, and consequently the opposite what is demonstrated by every major Department of Transport I have encountered. A brief outline on how it works:

Instead of single templates/corridors spanning the whole width of each roadway alignment, the corridors are broken up by element. 1 corridor per curb, lane, shoulder, guard rail, end condition, wall, barrier, etc. Each piece is connected to each other, eventually connecting directly or indirectly to control lines.

While this creates 100's of extra corridors, the advantages make this technique far superior to the designer, and end user (client of contractor) than the current approach for the following reasons:

1) Templates are simple, easy to create, and have no complex display rules so they are functional for the novice user

2) The same template can be re-used 1000's of times, across any project, making the data consistent 100% of the time, giving reliable consistent symbology when the data is visualized

3) The consistent nature of common templates used always simpler digital quantities to be extracted, as similar objects can be collected by symbology

4) Changes are more manageable - change only the parts you need to change, and the connectivity of all the other corridors will automatically be adjusted

5) More than 1 user can work on the same road in the same section at the same time as everything is broken into smaller pieces

6) Simpler to train - for those unfamiliar with a 3D environment, this 3D Linear Method is identical to criteria

7) Processing is substantially reduced - it is quicker to process 100's of small corridors with no complex rules than 1 or 2 massive corridors with lots of display rules by a factor of 10.

This technique has been implemented across every designer I have worked directly with in Illinois over the past 4 years, and there has been 3 distinct reactions:

a) Those with some 3D knowledge embraced it fully, recognizing that this is the ONLY way to utilize the software, no exceptions

b) Those with minimal or zero 3D knowledge dismissed it entirely, citing "This is not the way Bentley teaches it"

c) Those with medium experience recognize its power, and use a toned down version of 3D Linear method - they build templates that span all lanes, 1 for shoulders, then 1 for end conditions, for example.

Overall it has been received positively from those who understand the software's limitations, and widely used across Illinois Tollway I-294 project currently underway.

This modeling technique has caused quite a controversy here from the State Government in Illinois (IDOT) due to the radically different approach. So I wanted to hear from the greater community regarding this technique.

Generate transverse feature - OpenRoads equivalent

I'm transitioning from InRoads to OpenRoads and I can't seem to find the equivalent command for Generate Transverse Feature (slope lines).

Is this feature available in OpenRoads and if so, can someone please point me in the direction of where it can be found?

Thematic Display styles not working

Im trying to use the various Thematic display styles in ORD 2020 r2,

But independent of which stlye i chose i get an output like that

every tri is showing the full range of colors with the first and last 25% being grey.

what am i missing?

Why is Measure Length giving me an inaccurate length?

I'm running into an issue where my "Measure Length" tool is giving me an incorrect value. I am trying to measure a length of conduit, but it is giving me a length double of what the actual length is. I had it defined as an offset partial off the back of a sidewalk. Has anyone ever run into this before? It's an issue if I can't trust the measure tools.

Place Label in Rotated View? ORD

In OpenRoads Designer, is there a setting to allow labels to be placed relative to the current view? Similar to how dimensions and notes have always worked in Microstation.

I am trying to place a label (station, offset) in a design model with the view rotated parallel to the alignment.

Corridor Point Control - Vertical Elevation and Grade

Having some issues trying to use a specific form of point control. Specifically the Mode - Vertical, Control Type - Elevation and Grade.

I am attempting to set the inslope to be variable using the point control. I would like the horizontal width of the inslope to be variable, the slope to be constant, but target a specific elevation.

The point control seems to work in the corridor as far as the constant slope (1:3) and the horizontal distance being variable. But my issue is that it does not seem to target my specific elevation of (905.00)

Currently in the area of my point control the pond bottom (specific elevation) varies throughout. it seems as though it is just following a vertical difference with the profile? I can adjust the elevation in point control and watch the inslope shorten or extend depending on whether I go up or down. But still the elevations are not the same throughout the area.

Import Land XML Breaklines with Symbology

I have exported a TM to an XML file, DTM, and/or TIN. The original TM was built using a graphical filter.

I am then trying to import this TM in to a new file and only display the breaklines. The workspace is the same.

No matter the file format the resultant breaklines always come in all on level default.

Does anyone know how to get a 3d breakline file from a TM that would maintain the original symbology and feature names?

Target Aliasing Not Working

hi, this is my first post in this forum as we have now started transitioning to Openroads coming from Inroads SS2.

Trying to use target aliasing on Openroads 2022 Release 1 but i'm unable to make it work.

I've done this in Inroads SS2 with no problem but for some reason can't make it work in Openroads.

On the snapshot, i'm applying a target aliasing on a corridor going above another corridor named Flare Area. My template is just a basic template with only Active Surface as the target.

As you can see on the snapshot, it is ignoring the corridor but only seeking to target the existing ground Mildred Lake.

Anything i'm missing here?

Import .alg files

I have a problem. I am learning Open Roads Designer Trial Version (14 Days).

I want to import alg geometry file but it is not imported. Could it be because it's a trial version?

ORD - But What Are the Rules?

I can rule geometry to graphics or features in corridors or other alignments. I can rule terrain models to corridors or graphics. I can rule almost anything to almost any other thing. Rules can cross files. I can deactivate, activate and delete rules. But what are the rules? As far as I can tell, with some limited exceptions, there is no way to list what rules control any feature. Am I missing something?

Terrain not triangulating correctly

I've attached 2 pics. The first one shows the breakline between the elevations underlined in red. The yellow area is the 613.10 contour. The dashed line is how the contour should go. This breakline is on a curve so ORD calculated triangles in between. In pic two you can see these elevations. Those are not correct to me. Anyone got an idea?

OpenRoads Designer - Working Cross Section Set

Has anyone come up with an efficient way to compile a single DGN file with cross sections in OpenRoads Designer? Currently, we are referencing all of the XS models into a nested compiled file, which is tedious and inefficient. I submitted a product enhancement request for this (option working sections similar to an SS2/SS4 XS set and option to created single DGN XS sheets) but I was wondering if anyone has a work around until (if) they get to this? Running ORD release 3 (10.05.00.30).

[ORD 2022 R1] Exported Terrains Don't Match Original

I tried exporting a complex terrain to all of the available export formats (dtm, tin, .xml, fil, and txt). When I create a new terrain from any of these exported files the triangles don't match the original terrain. I think the underlying terrain is being reprocessed, thereby losing any terrain edits that may have been done. I think this happens on any edited terrain, not just complex terrains.

This seems like a defect. Am I expecting too much?

How to create an alignment in Microstation SS10 without Geopak? Is this possible, or do I have to have Geopak installed? Could I create an alignment in ORD and insert it in SS10? Would it be compatible?
