And NO it has nothing to do with my file or configuration so please don't ask for the file or configuration. Out-of-the-box MicroStation/AECOsim behaves the same and Bentley may try it on every version they want to (MS=SS3 and ABD = SS4 - SS6). Tip for Bentley when trouble shooting, don't open the program and turn off levels because it works fine when you just started the software, it starts behaving weird when you are working for a while.

How do I create finish floor by shape?

How do I create finish floor by shape option with irregular shape?
To create a DG Single Wyth wall it is a part that is made into an assembly that is added to a DG catalob

To create a DG Mult-Wyth Wall it is a group of parts that are made into an assembly and added to a DG catalog

To create a DG wall you must have done one of the things above

THEY DON'T STAND ALONE

Why not have a tool that takes the wall automatically to a DG Catalog of the same name, ht, width, etc

Maybe a button in the DIALOG for Part Creation

A flat roof.

Which technically means.

it is rectilinear but that does not mean a rectagle

It sloes to what starts as one ridge 2' from one side

It slopes to a dozen roof drains

The way it is made is typical.

The bar joist rest on the North wall at 12'-8"

The south wall zig-zags up and down by 4". Every 20'

Then a 2' fill is poured from the south wall to the drains

This is a true flat roof.

Both top and bottom modify.

Push pull will do the top but leaves the bottom flat

Any Suggestions

This blog addresses the issues surrounding learning and using PCS, but also the related plight of Bentley AECOsimm/ Micostation users in general. PCS is an extremely difficult almost impossible program to learn for various reasons outlined below. The procedure to create simple components such as a door or window is by far too tricky and fiddly. Admittedly if you know how, it is very simple. But how many people are there that really know how? There is a huge Grand Canyon that needs to be bridged. This simply amplifies what is continuously being echoed about Bentley software in general, "Not very user friendly “ Its almost as if Bentley are determined to create an aristocratic class of Techies who retain exclusive rights of know-how.

Whatever Bentley's objective is, the summary is that it is a very good piece of software which so far only very few can use fluently, thereby defeating the intention and purpose. Hence the continued alienation of the vast majority of Bentley users to what should be the backbone of the software as it offers far more flexibility and power than using compound cells.

Make the user interface more Microstationesque !!!

What really is the future of this kit. Is it to be discontinued? revamped ? Rumours have been flying around for years. We, the Bentley Community need some formal clarification on this.. It looks like a program that was acquired and appended from elsewhere else and blended to suit. It needs closer integration within Bentley AECOsim / Microstation merging tools for creating and manipulating elements and not just sit outside the program as an add on. In general the tools are entirely alien interface in that they look and operate differently. The object selection process and other manipulation tools completely suck (if you don't know how to use them) . The placement and manipulation tools are all very different having their own system of precision entry which would do well to be integrated with the Bentley /Microstaion interface. because they work great.

=\DoorThickness*-1 Tuck the mathematical expressionism away somewhere out of sight !!!

A lot of the use of mathematical expressionism in PCS should be recessed into the background, a sort of under the bonnet operation.

I used to be very good at dismantling my VW and putting it back together again but looking under the hood of my current car the other day I decided that motor mechanics has gone beyond what I care to tamper with, even for the simplest things..

Architects are not essentially high level mathematicians. I think beyond a certain level we tend to freeze up because it requires a different type of creative thinking that detracts from the normal thought process involved in defining space and structure.

Provide learning material that is well written!!.

Not all the material on the learn server is that well written. The module on Parametric cell studio is so bad, it is unbelievable. "IF" you are lucky enough to have access to it, you will find it is totally shrouded and obscure as to how the nature of the tasks it sets out to achieve fits into the whole, In fact there is no whole. You sort of get the impression that you will only understand what it is all about if you make it to the end of the document, but then you are more likely to give up first. In general it is disjointed, lacks refinement and coherency and leaves the reader with a broad question mark over the head. In fighting my way through the document. ( Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it starts off showing you how to create a door and ends up with a window) I find that the steps are not clearly explained. The authors always tend to assume that you know exactly what they mean and thereby leave out crucial steps that can take a couple of hours (or days) to figure out before you finally understand what you are being asked to do.. It doesn't even address the all important aspect of creating variables from scratch, which variables to use where and why, or how you achieve flexibility using such variables seeing as they are the backbone of the parametric operations!! I mean, thats what we all want to achieve isn’t it, Parametrics? That accolade goes to the Chinese gentleman on YouTube, The only problem is, half of it is in Chinese. It is fairly obvious that it was written in a rush as an afterthought. Bentley could revamp this and other tutorials (and thus their reputation) by out-sourcing someone (me!!) on a consultancy basis to come up with a clear, comprehensive, concise and graphically explicit tutorial document.

Here is a typical example extract on positioning a mullion- from the chapter on Window Components Miraculously the mullion skews at an angle as you increase its length : -

I am sure there are a handful of experts who really know this kit inside out, but this doesn't help anything if they can't explain it properly. This is a similar case with a lot of Bentley documentation I have come across, the procedures are not explained explicitly enough. I have come to the conclusion that designing and writing a program and writing the technical Documentation that goes with it are two very separate skills. The material needs to adopt a more task centred, step by step approach. I always find it more useful when explanations and definitions are embedded within the context of an on-going "How to" demonstration example. Bentley will claim that they already provide this, but have they surveyed their trainees and assessed how easy or difficult it is to navigate through the material.?

Here is another typical example :

To create a vision panel in a door leaf,

it should have first been explained that : -

A snap set is used to build hierarchical associative relationships between existing and new elements and avoid drawing its component on the wrong plane

"If" you are able to locate the definition in the help files for PCF wherever it is buried it puts it like this: . .

Prior to placing a new element or component which must be related to an existing element, choose the Edit Snap Set tool then choose the element or elements you wish to make snapable for your new elements or components. In this way you build hierarchical associative relationships between your new elements and the pre-selected elements in the Snap Set. How long winded is that?

Additionally about creating a constrained offset of a view panel from the edge of a door leaf

Step 19 (Page 57 on creating an Auto component in the PCS Bentley learn server manual says vaguely :

Right click on the path ( to the learner What's a path?) and add Distance constraints to the edges of the door leaf. ( Hello . . .?)

Moving on to what it should say :

To Create a constraint Dimension between the vision panel and the edges of the door:

Select the opening created in the door leaf

Click on it again to activate it

Drag the edge of the outline path of the opening to the edge of the door leaf

When the elements are locked you will see two red arrows pointing inwards along the edge of the door leaf indicating that a constraint has been established between the two

Right click along the dotted line of the red arrows and select distance

You will see that a dimension now appears allowing you to vary the distance between the edge and the opening and place the offset dimension manually

Click on the dimension and fill in a dimension in the precision value box

Click the green tick mark to accept the new value

Data point away from the object to accept the new position

The vision panel edge should now maintain a fixed distance from the edge of the door leaf no matter how wide you make the door

Is it laziness or a lack of ability to communicate?

Provide more easy access to free instructional material!!

In the UK the HS2 transport project is estimated at £60 Billion and is the exclusive domain of Bentley as well as the whole of the remainder of the British transport network. These two networks alone amount to the cost of at least half of all other construction projects in the UK including the few that are left using the Bentley / Microstation platform (A rough Guestimate) . I really don't understand then why a company that globally dominates the construction industry is so picky about who should have access to the training material and, should be trying to generate revenue from this. It is only available if you are prepared to pay the premium price for it. Why do we have to belong to an exclusive club and pay an additional premium to learn a bit of software you wrote that we pay for? This policy is having a severe knock on effect in that a lot of former microstation die hards are migrating over to Revit/Autodesk simply because the training resources are more readily available.. All the youngsters graduating from school these days are proficient Revit users but haven't got a clue about Bentley products not to talk of Parametric cell studio. Free education will expand the awareness of your product and ensure its longevity.

The overall result is that the market for AECOsim users in general is continuing to shrink at a phenomenal rate. We now find it difficult to find other consultants who use the same platform, in fact on all our current BIM projects we are now always the only AECOsim users. Clients are getting prickly about this and will eventually wise up to the fact that they do not need to continue to tolerate the potential for additional errors and data management complications. It will soon become No Revit . . .No Commission!!

Here are two examples of centerlines that are going in the wrong direction.

One: This is "X" for rouch carpentry. Most all is 1/1/2" for where I use it alot so I can create one pattern at 1" that by default will work with all 1 1/2" stock if I scale to 1.5 and pattern to width. This is currently working but matching height and not width.

The second is for rebar. I have lines stryles to cove most combinations of rebar in a slab or footing, from one to 3 layers

It is not placing like it used to. there is no stretching on this one as it is full length of slab or footing. but notice it is placing in the wrong direction
