First I will say that I have created numerous dimension driven parts (cell, blocks, etc.) in other 3D CAD applications. In that scenario, a table operating in the background associated with the part allows a user to choose a specific part instance from the table and the part is then generated from values in the table. Those who use structural steel sections or others who use bolts of various sizes will understand the process.

Upon reading the provided V8i help docs, I perceive that the only way to set parameters in a DDD cell is that an algebraic expression must drive the dimensional relationships defined in the geometry. In the case of socket head cap screws (those requiring a hex wrench to turn) the measurements across the flats of the hexagonal hole will not necessarily be described by a fixed algebraic formula but by a stock wrench size set by the governing machine screw standard.

So my question comes down to this: Does V8i have a way to seed the measurements of a parametrically designed cell with values which are not based strictly on algebraic expressions? I understand that an MDL module could possibly read a text file, display a dialog box and then proceed to build the cell from user selected input, but I am not expecting to make a career of developing MDL apps any time soon.

I am open to additional reading on the subject and request a source for the documentation.

MicroStation V8i SS3 remains on top of other applications

We have a user that repeatedly has MicroStation take over and remain on top of other applications. I extend a line dynamically. I choose a point near the end I want to extend. Instead of extending from there, it shortens the other end, bringing it to where I clicked. So a simple two click extend takes several as I extend one end, then the other that was shortened up, then have to trim the other, or else snap to something during extending to get it to where it was before the extend took place, because that end was never supposed to move. I'm missing something obvious. I would *assume* that whatever side of the midpoint you pick that is the side that will extend dynamically.
I applied some clip masks to a reference file that is attached to a sheet model in order to "block" the elements within those areas from being visible or plotting. In the attached pdf the clip masks were defined by creating a fence from circles, then applying the masks through Reference Manager.

What's happening is that when I zoom out the adjacent linework disappears, both in the design model and in the plot. the farther you zoom out, the more that disappears. If I zoom way in, it is all visible - almost like there is a lineweight being applied. In the pdf the heavy lines running into the circle at right angles are what is being inadvertently clipped. both the large gap running left from the circle and the small gap running down from the circle are errors - those lines are solid with no gaps.

I do not know for certain that this is happening from the clip masks, but it occurs at each of four defined for the reference file attachment.

I'm using clips because trying to "mask" the reference file linework with dense hatches or opaque fills did not work, regardless of whether the hatch/fill was applied in the referenced design file, or in the sheet model parent dgn.

Does anyone have any ideas of either how to fix this, or a better method of blocking circular portions of the reference file from appearing and plotting?

thanks,

I cannot trim/remove the lines from this area. I have used Edit>Bring to Front to make sure my hatch is in front. It looks OK in the editing space, but plots with the reference files lines in front to the hatch.

I created a level with a particular name, put the hatch on it, edited the pen table to recognize this level and, using plot priority, plot in front of the level that the lines are on: hatch priority 50, lines: priority 45. This worked for about one day, but the next it went back to plotting the lines in front.

is there anything I can do to get the lines to be consistently covered by the hatch when plotted?

I recently stumbled across a key-in string that will orient a North arrow cell automatically when being placed. This would be perfect if my firm liked to put the "Scale: " text with the same orientation as the arrow but they do not. Instead we align the "Scale: " text with the view, which I think is pretty common.

Because of this, I created a second cell, one with the text "$SCALE$" (A text substitution we make with our pen table using named expressions), and I expanded the key-in string to place the scale cell a distance of 1 unit below the arrow cell after the arrow cell is placed.

The string is now...

ac=North;aa=0;accudraw dialog;accudraw setorigin;accudraw rotate top;%d;accudraw rotate view;reset;ac=Scale;dx=0,-1,0;reset

My question then is, is there any way to make the distance of 1 unit a variable amount based off of the active scale?

Something to the effect of ...dx=0,<as=>*-1,0...

I am anticipating the answer is a no, but I suggested solutions do not have to be limited to the key-in dialog. I am open to macros and other utilities so long as the end result can get slapped on a function key.

If I have "Enable SmartLine modifications" checked in the Tool Settings dialog, which allows me to pick the shape by one of the segments, the AccuDraw compass changes from Polar to Rectangular when the segment is chosen. I must then hit the space bar again to change back to Polar and do what I need to. Once the segment is relocated, AccuDraw changes back to Polar. It stays on Polar if the box is not checked, but then I am not able to choose the shape by a side (segment).
