I am getting the following errors when I run a Design All in the RAM Steel BEAM/Joist module. In cases where I can't get true composite action, I still want to specify the minimum amount of shear studs. What does the module show when I view the design? The design as if the error didn't exist or taking into account the error?

1. Number of studs required exceeds maximum rows specified

2. Not enough studs for 25% composite action

3. Cannot fit enough studs for 25% composite action

4. Flange width inadequate for stud rows required

5. Rib spacing is greater than maximum stud spacing

6. Rib spacing is greater than user-specified maximum stud spacing

Also, why does the program specify zero studs sometimes (and then return error 2 above) when I haven't told it to do this? I have to go in and manually change it in these cases which is a hassle.

Thanks!

RAM Deflection Diagram

Hi,

I was checking how the program calculated the maximum deflection, so I made a 10' by 10' simple test case using composite deck .

The Concrete Composite Deck is assigned as follow

The Deflection of the beam I was checking is the upper edge beam as shown

The distributed load applied on the beam is DL=0.156 klf and LL= 0.05 klf, which is the same as what I hand calculated.

However, using the composite effective moment of Inertia = 109.34in^4, w=0.206 klf and delta = 5wL^4 / (384EI) for simply support beam, I got 0.015 in for deflection.

versus 0.038in maximum deflection that the program is showing

It will be helpful if anyone can answer with what load combination the program is using to calculate the maximum deflection

and why the program is giving me a larger expected deflection.

Sorry for the long message!

No composite Action for rotated beams

Hi,

I find out Ram seems doesn't consider composite action for beams with rotated orientation and I want to know how to include composite actions into my model.

Anyone has this issue before?

Ask A Question I

Ask a question in a forum.
