I notice that whenever I attach or overlay an X-ref and save my model inside SewerCAD update 4 running within C3D 2023 (issue may replicate in other Haested product line and will be able to note that as we proceed with other project wet services models), the next time I open the model it shows error messages and suggest to recover the file which is of no use. Also if the recover prompt is discarded and the model is opened, the network is visible but not selectable. All data is still there in the database and can be seen in the Flex tables, but engineer cannot even select a model element.

If engineer manages to remove the x-ref (not straight forward as you may need to try couple of times while receiving fatal error and whole software crashes or need to try open the CAD version from the C3D only software without the SewerCAD integration and remove the X-ref from there and save and close and open and save and close a couple of times) to then restore the file and model functionality.

This behavior also repeats whenever opening models built with earlier versions, so for instance I have a laptop that still runs the last CONNECT Update 3 version and i open the earlier models fine, but when i try to open the same model using the SewerCAD update 4 running within C3D 2023 it also shows a similar behavior.

Any clue one what is happening here?

if you have a number of catchments (many more than handful) and a network downstream that you want to design/analyze and you want to mandate that some of the individual catchments handle the 5 year return period storm run off on their own and then discharge to you the excess such that the downstream network is basically designed for the balance run off up to 10 year return period storm run off ... some catchments will still discharge the full 10 year return period storm run off straight into the network.

I was thinking on one way to model this is to use the LID with say rain barrel control (defining storage and under-drain) such that the storage is sized for the 5 year return volume (offline estimation to define the input), and then the whole model is built and run for the 10 year (in terms of Rainfall hyetograph)... how does that seem of an approach?

is it better to go down the way of a pond / pond maker tool?

A topic for discussion which was once raised but didn't seem to have concluded except for reference to use the most recent release of the software which may or may not be related to the causes... anyhow, the difference in this post is that we have a suspected case which model will be provided to be investigated ... then may be we can conclude a couple of lessons learned out of the exercise.

The main drivers are:

1. Is there anything suggesting instability in the profiles views?

2. how would you go about verifying that in the actual model? (time steps / continuity errors/ hydraulic results reviewer / what else to look for)

3. Then ultimately, is it acceptable and would you argue against any other views?

We usually use the SCS method to estimate run off volume for sizing retention elements. On many projects, the result coming from CS using the SWMM explicit engine and SCS hydrograph method (with 24hrs storm event rainfall hyetograph of 25 years return period) are matching that calculated from a a quick hand calculation of the SCS formula ( basically calculating the potential maximum retention depth S in mm using the composite area CN and applying a formula to calculate the actual direct run off depth Q in mm and then multiply this depth by area of the catchment to get the volume of run off). For hand calculation we use total depth from a 24hrs storm event of the 25 years return period.

One engineer recently suggested consideration of the rainfall intensity for 25 years return period and at the 24th hour from an IDF curve (to represent the average intensity over that 24 hour storm event duration) and then applying the rational formula (with the weighted run off coefficient and project area) to calculate the discharge rate and then from that through multiplication with time, the volume for 24 hours event. Of course the result is almost twice that calculated from SCS.

I'd like to hear feedback on validity or limitations (catchments / small Tcs)

We've a small subdivision area that happens to receive flow from other external areas. Originally the model was built in StormCAD as those external areas were routed somewhere else and didn't interact with the new subdivision but later on got to have the flow routed through our area after the location of a retention pond was changed during land use planning.

The model was originally built and run in StormCAD as it met the requirements but then after the external catchments identified we opted for hydrodynamic in Civil Storm. To do so, we first added the external catchments to the StormCAD model and defined their parameters and ran the model to get some initial pipe sizing. We then opened the model in Civil Storm and defined the hyetograph, CN, and unit hydro-graph..etc and set up analysis mode using explicit engine.

We ran validation and it runs fine, but ran the model and it shows unspecified error messages. We're running CivilStorm 10.01.00.70 on Autodesk Civil 3D 2017.

when we open the model from the standalone interface it just crashes.

I tried exporting the model as a sub-model and importing it into a new empty model file and the model did complete the run.
