We are pleased to announce the release of OpenRoads Navigator CONNECT Edition (Update 5 – March 2017).

OpenRoads Navigator is an easy-to-use, dynamic mobile software that provides quick access to civil data in the field. You can interactively view, analyze, and augment a wide variety of project information, including reviewing existing terrain, 3D models, and 2D topographies. Improve project coordination and accelerate collaboration through faster reliable capture of feedback from field staff. The result is better decisions throughout the lifecycle of a project, while minimizing risk.

This version (05.05.06) is available for download at:

OpenRoads Navigator for Windows: I'm getting a license expired message. How do I fix it?

This is the dialog we are getting on two computers now.

If we click “Activate” like we would for PowerGEOPAK and go through the same steps it will not accept the license info we use.

How can we get the licensing to work?

OpenRoads Navigator: How do I set the display units for measure tools

What should we be changing this to before we create the model?

Lou's Response:

The format of the measure tools in OpenRoads Navigator is based on the Format field in the active file / model where you are initiating the publishing. You do not have to change all the files, just the one for publishing. It can be changed even if elements are drawn into the file. The best way to explain is by a few examples.

If you use MU, you will get measurements in feet or meters. Example 151.25' or 97.50m. Note the foot or meter symbol from the Master Unit label field is used.

If it is set to MU:SU, you will get measurements in both units. Example: 151' 3" or 97m 5cm.

If it is set to MU:SU and you have the MS unit label set to ft and the SU unit label set to si (U.S. Survey inches) then the label will be 151ft. 3si.

There are no user-defined settings in OpenRoads Navigator to control units, except for stationing.

I am referencing "Open Roads Navigator User FAQ v4.pdf". I have created a connect project and selected it but I don't see default fields as shown in the guidance. How do I create a form from scratch?

We are excited to announce that the first commercial release of OpenRoads Navigator for Windows CONNECT edition is now available for download in the Bentley fulfillment center. Note the listing is incorrect. It is 64 bit, not 32.

Good news! The latest version (05.05.04) is now available in the Apps and Google Play stores!!

This version includes:

New redline toolset that enables full-circle workflow, overlaying redlines back on source DGN files.
New Measure Area tool
Line weight thickener

Fixed defects include:

GPS blue dot location improved. (note you will need the latest publisher AND this mobile version – Sorry but the problem was on both the publisher and mobile app sides)
Custom line styles and hatching now work.

Great News! ORN Release!

We have just released our first upgrade to OpenRoads Navigator on both iOS and Android platforms. Users who already have it loaded should get an alert. We have added a cool virtual mouse to station / offset and measure along tools, along with an active alignment. Check out What's New for more details! Next release in about six weeks.

OpenRoads Navigator - adding free comments

I wonder if there is a way to attach a free note to any given location in your project, like placing a PlaceMark with comment and attachment to where you tap a screen.

For now I found only the way to attach comment to an existing element. In my current workflow I want to take my android device onsite and use it to collect information regarding existing terrain and infrastructure pieces just before designing phase. Only a map and a CL were published to imodel for better orientation in field. So there are not too many elements where I can attach notes.

Best software for OpenRoads Design Review & Analysis

Hi all,

We are currently designing our first project in OpenRoads and are looking for Bentley PC software that can be used by design reviewers to interrogate and review our designs. I've noticed that there are a few "viewers" and "navigator" products but i'm not sure which one would be best.

Does anyone have any idea which ones would suit us best? Ideally it would be software that wouldn't need an additional license, simple to use as the reviewers are not Bentley users or designers, and would have OpenRoads dynamic cross section and analysis tools.

Open Roads Survey for InRoads Survey Users Guide

This is a desperately needed manual! The more I play with this, the more I am convinced that I will never switch to Open Roads!

Can you hear my frustration? I'm going on a rant. You can join me or ignore me. I just need to vent a little.

Now I am getting no linework and all of my points are assigned Default as their feature. I've tried bringing in our standard TDS RAW files, or our already save FWD files. What I get is crap!

When I was getting lines, I we having issues with JNC or DASH "-" coding, along with dual point coding. Dash coding is for an Electric Pole with a Guy Wire. You shoot the pole with EP and the Guy Wire with GUY-EP and you get a line connecting the two and the Guy Wire cell rotates to align with the line. Alternatively, you could use one of the following:

EP-GUY on the pole
EP JNC GUY on the pole or
GUY JNC EP on the guy wire

Since I am not getting my point codes nor my ST codes recognized, a dual code is light years away.

I have found no other coding method that worked as well as InRoads Survey, and was pleasantly surprised to see that Civil 3D can now be configured to recognize most of InRoads codes, including dual coding. I feel like Open Roads Survey is a step in the wrong direction.

When I link my XIN, why doesn't the software automatically also use my control codes? And why are the buried so deep into the software. And why is the help on many of these settings no help?

For Example, what is a "Description Separator"?

With InRoads, we use ALPHA CODES and CONTROL CODES. And every other bit of info is entered as Attributes, which are not inline with the other codes. All I need is for it to read alpha codes and control codes for each point and then read the attributes associated with the point.

I still cannot believe that we are expected to have no alpha codes that "contain" linking codes? Who thought that was a good idea.
