About Marshall Dean

Scope Australia is a rapidly expanding West Australian company providing specialist services to the Resource and Construction sectors. Scope Australia is an integrated management system exponent with accreditation to international Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality standards. Scope Australia has a diverse range of business units to meet its customer requirements.

I started working here in August 2011.

February ’09 – July ‘11

AECOM

Senior Civil Technician, Transportation

 

AECOM employs over 45,000 employees worldwide and is a leader in all key markets that it serves. AECOM Sudbury deals with Highway, Water and Municipal design work, as well as providing Contract Administrators to oversee the construction.

I was employed as a Senior Technician and I was responsible for the Highway Design, using Bentley’s InRoads and AutoCAD/Microstation.

 

General Tasks:

  • Amendments and improvements to CAD drawings
  • CAD design from concept to finished design
  • Highway Design on Bentley InRoads
  • Creating construction contract packages for Highway designs
  • Improvements to our block and template file system
  • Working with many Engineers for different clients
  • Setting tasks for Junior employees
  • Giving guidance to Junior employees
  • Filming and editing video footage for Highway surveys
  • General IT tasks, and main IT contact in emergencies

 

Notable Clients and Projects:

  • Ontario Ministry of Transportation
    InRoads designs on a number of highway projects in the northern Ontario area, ranging from $2 million to $3 million.
  • City of Greater Sudbury
    Worked on Contract A of the drawing package for Maley Drive Extension as the lead draftsperson. This portion of the project was worth $15 million.

 

 

April ’07 – February ‘09

Orkney Islands Council

Roads Operations Technician

 

The Orkney Islands Council employs over 1,500 people in various positions to provide a full service to the public. Roads Operation deals with the construction and maintenance of all kinds of roads across Orkney at varying scales, from Pot holes to new road constructions. This department has an annual turn over of around £1.5m.

I was employed as a Roads Technician and was responsible for the setting up of works on site. When the drawings arrive, I reviewed them and acquired the information necessary for the operatives to construct the works quickly and safely. This also included setting up the site and creating Risk Assessments and Method Statements. I was also required to create CAD drawings and to undertake GPS surveys.

 

General Tasks:

  • Amendments and improvements to CAD drawings
  • CAD design from concept to finished design
  • Levelling with both laser level and GPS
  • Creating Health & Safety documents
  • Risk Assessments and Method Statements
  • Using Symology to place jobs onto the Scottish Road Works Register
  • Creating roads sign designs
  • Camera surveys for surface water pipes and culverts
  • Standby Rota – on every third week for winter gritting and other emergencies
  • Weather Forecasts – make decisions on whether gritting is necessary that evening and/or the following day

 

Notable Clients and Projects:

  • Orkney Islands Council
    Hatston Industrial Estate new Cycleway/Footway to link Hatston Ferry Terminal with the centre of Kirkwall. (£0.25m)
    I created the Health & Safety plan, some CAD details and solved any problems with the design.
  • Orkney Islands Council
    Repair to costal defence on the isle of Sanday. (£0.2m)
    I carried out the GPS survey and created preliminary drawings from the data, which included sections from PDS. When the final design had been agreed I created the construction drawings. I was then required to carry out inspections on site during construction.

 

 

November ’04 – April ‘07

Orkney Islands Council

Engineering Technician

 

The Orkney Islands Council employs over 1,500 people in various positions to provide a full service to the public. Engineering Services deals with the design of roads of varying sizes across Orkney, from Footways to Car Parks to new roads. This department had an annual turn over of around £4.5m.

I was employed as a Technician and was responsible for CAD drawings, some minor designs, quantities and GPS surveys.

 

General Tasks:

  • Amendments and improvements to CAD drawings
  • CAD design from concept to finished design
  • Doing 3D road designs on PDS
  • Compiling and distribution of documents to clients
  • Creating Streetlight Models using Lighting Reality Design Software
  • Surveying using GPS equipment
  • Adjusting the Surveying model in N4ce
  • Working to strict deadlines
  • Fully conversant with LT ’97, ’98, ‘2000 CAD, CAD ‘2002, CAD LT 2006, CAD 2006 & CAD 2008 software (Full version)

 

Notable Clients and Projects:

  • Andrew Sinclair
    AyreMills roundabout – largest one in Orkney. (£0.2m)
    I did amendments to various drawings. I was required to visit the site regularly and fill out a site diary.
  • Orkney Islands Council
    St Mary’s footway (£0.1m)
    I carried out the GPS survey and created construction drawings. I was then required to carry out inspections on site during construction. 

 

 

October ’03 – November ’04

MouchelParkman

CAD Draftsman

 

MouchelParkman provides managerial, commercial and technical expertise to clients in the public sector and regulated industry, and to a lesser extent the private sector. They employ over 4,500 employees and have an annual turnover of £270m. MouchelParkman Bridges dealt with the assessment, repair and design of Bridges. From Railways to Carriageways.

My main tasks were to draft for the Engineers and manage a small team of Student Surveyors. I worked on Inspecting bridges and then drawing my results, amendments to drawing details and improvements to the companies Block library and templates.     

 

General Tasks:

  • Amendments and improvements to CAD drawings
  • CAD design from concept to finished design
  • Compiling and distribution of documents to clients
  • Working to strict deadlines
  • Creating a block library and adjusting the templates
  • Fully conversant with LT ’97, ’98, ‘2000 CAD & CAD ‘2002 software (Full version)
  • Inspection of bridges – photographing and noting defects
  • Management of a surveying team
  • Training and Development of junior draughtsman

 

Notable Clients and Projects:

  • Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council
    Burr and Retaining wall inspections – I managed a team of students to survey all the known walls for the Council.
  • Highways Agency
    Constant inspections on large highway bridges in the North West.
  • British Rail
    I drafted Engineer’s inspection sketches into working drawings.

 

 

August ’02 – October ‘03

Cooper, Beal & Ross

CAD Draftsman

 

Cooper Beal & Ross are consulting engineers and are located in Stockport. They design Structures of varying sizes, from refurbishments to new builds. They employ under 10 employees, with an annual turn over of £0.5m 

My main tasks were to draught for the Engineers. I worked on drawings for the refurbishment of a building at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester, changing it to a laboratory. Drafted the drawings for a new portal framed building and improved their block library.

  • CAD design from concept to finished design
  • Compiling and distribution of documents to clients
  • Working to strict deadlines
  • Fully conversant with LT ’97, ’98 CAD & CAD ‘2000 software

    Refurbishment of building to Laboratory.
    Created construction drawings from Engineer’s sketches. (£2m)

 

 

August ’99 – August ‘02

Roscoe Capita Ltd.

Junior/CAD Draftsman

 

Roscoe Capita (now known as Capita Symons) designed telecom sites for Mobile phone companies, from compounds to building mounts, when they were experiencing significant growth. They also had Structures and Civils departments. They employed over 500 employees nationwide and had an annual turnover of £50m.

My main tasks were to draft for the Engineers (as well as other Junior tasks like photocopying, Post, etc.). I worked on new compounds and building mount drawings for the Orange network, around the North West of England, upgrading a large number of drawings to As-Builts and amending drawings. 

 

General Tasks:

  • Amendments and improvements to CAD drawings
  • CAD design from concept to finished design
  • Inserting blocks from block libraries.
  • Compiling and distribution of documents to clients
  • Working to strict deadlines
  • Involvement in 3D coordinate drawing
  • Fully conversant with LT ’97, ’98 CAD & LT 2002 software

 

Notable Clients and Projects:

  • Roscoe Capita
    I was asked to upgrade over 100 drawings to As-Built over a succession of weekends.
  • Orange
    Mobile phone antenna compounds
    Drafted many green sites (rural) and building sites from CAD blocks. The multi sites, containing antennas from a number of mobile providers, built on acquired farmland, would generally create £50k a site.
