How do I create item sets in Bentley Navigator?

Overview

This blog shows how to create an item set within Bentley Navigator. Item sets will allow you to group elements based on user-defined criteria from component data. Once the groups are created you can then change the color and transparency of the elements contained in the group by activating the item set. This feature is available only in Bentley Navigator.

Solution

  1. Open an imodel in Bentley Navigator.
  2. Go to Tools > Groups > 3 Item Sets.

  3. Select the tool button "New Item Set" in the Item Sets dialog.
  4. There are two ways to add items to the item set. You can create a query and search by a particular criteria OR you can add your items manually using the selection tools in the "element selection" toolbox. You cannot do both, which has been logged as an enhancement request.

  5. So click the binoculars in the Item sets dialog and create a query OR click "add elements" and manually start picking what you want in the item set. You will know if the items are added because you will have a count of components in the "element" column.
  6. You can also see the components in your item set by either selecting "highlight item set" or "isolate item set".

Note: Item sets are also useful when running Clash Detection. In the Clash Detection dialog, your item sets will be selectable in the "Criteria" tab under "named groups" at the bottom of the list.
