From the Opening Plenary welcome by President & CEO Matt Dozier, it quickly became apparent that EAST is different-- this is not your grandfather's educational program! Everyone was treated to an impromptu (as far as we knew) flash mob, expertly executed by several schools from their seats in the first few rows of the Hot Springs Convention Center's Horner Hall auditorium. Picture 200 students and facilitators doing the Dougie and you'll get an accurate mental picture.

This year's conference, termed 'Innovation Generation', encouraged students to consider the National Service Project theme of Energy Efficiency. While community projects were by no means restricted to this objective, many included components of sustainability, a mission near and dear to Bentley. One energy conservation project involved quantifying, in today's dollars, the annual savings realized by unplugging classroom electrical devices when not in use. Measuring these kilowatt hours resulted in identifying significant opportunities to redirect funds to more beneficial uses. Other projects ranged from publicizing the dangers of texting and driving to mapping a local cemetary's damaged headstones so as to provide specific documented locations for grieving visitors. There were district-wide recycling initiatives, blood drives in observance of the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 to recognize our service men and women, and many more.

A longtime partner of EAST, Bentley's involvement included a breakout session led by Ed Wright that highlighted www.bentley.com/studentserver, a MicroStation V8i course led by Greg Hamano of Archway Systems, and the MicroStation Student Competition. This year's winning project, entitled 'Bentley MicroStation Energy Efficient Home', was submitted by a student team from Henderson Health Sciences Magnet Middle School, in Little Rock. Team leader Dulce Yerena attended the conference and accepted the winning prize for herself and on behalf of team member Blanca Torres. Each received a Student Academic Suite of Bentley software (a 2-year license of MicroStation and a dozen other solutions), and a $100 gift card to Best Buy. Congratulations Dulce (pictured below) and Blanca!

Check back after the 2013 National Service Project theme is announced, for further details on the 2013 Bentley MicroStation Student Competition and submit your project for a chance to win software and prizes. Did you know that there are MicroStation V8i tutorials and videos that are available right now on the EAST website? For further information, just click on the link found here.

Henderson Middle School takes top prize in Bentley's MicroStation Student Competition at 2009 EAST Conference

In early March, just before tip-off of the NCAA Hoops Conference Tournaments that precede March Madness, I travel to Hot Springs, Arkansas, for the Environmental and Spatial Technology (EAST) Annual Conference. In the modest confines of the Hot Springs Convention Center, several thousand middle-to-highschoolers and their EAST Facilitators arrive, following bus trips of varying durations. They gather to celebrate a truly unique technology program, and to showcase the projects on which the students have been working throughout the school year.

The multi-tiered projects--- ranging in scope from campus recycling to mapping optimal school bus routes, honoring war veterans to designing airport web sites, robotics competitions to city park planning--- feature the underlying themes of technology usage, community service, and educational improvement. These students are to be commended, both for the results of their efforts, and the passion for completing the tasks at hand.

Many of these EAST schools subscribe to our Be Careers Network academic software program, primarily to teach MicroStation in the classroom. Bentley is proud to support the EAST Initiative, and to sponsor the MicroStation Student Competition, in which the winning team is recognized before the entire roster of attendees during the Opening Plenary.

This year's showcase winners hail from Little Rock, Arkansas. Henderson Middle School students Terrell Henry, Antonio Igbokidi, and Javier WIlliams took top honors for their project, 'School Yard Habitat Arboretum'. Each received a $50 gift card and a 2-year XM version Academic Student Suite. Congratulations to them and their EAST Facilitator, Teretha Kelly. To all EAST schools-- Keep those submissions coming! We look forward to seeing more competition entries in 2010.

A brief snow squall and the unseasonably cold Atlanta climate couldn't dampen the enthusiasm during the recent January 2009 GenerativeComponents workshop, deftly delivered by Bentley Research Director and Computational Design expert, Volker Mueller, at Georgia Institute of Technology. Already emersed in Building Information Modeling, the College of Architecture played host to this 2-day, capacity event, which initiated the school's participation in our GenerativeComponents University Program.

Getting nearly 30 students to commit to sixteen Friday-Saturday hours is no small feat. Holding their attention while leading them through increasingly complex exercises is a testament to both the instructor and the technology.

Georgia Tech Visiting Architecture Professor, Tristan Al-Haddad, a 2008 Academic BE Awards juror, expertly performed second chair duties, serving as additional tutor throughout the weekend. He preserved the intimate ratio, ably assisting attendees as they completed tasks. Also in attendance were Dr. Russell Gentry, Architecture Program Associate Director of Research, and Andres Cavieres, graduate researcher and legacy GC user.

Prior to kicking off the workshop, we were joined by longtime Georgia Tech Architecture professor, Chuck Eastman, for a tour of the Advanced Wood Products Laboratory http://www.coa.gatech.edu/awpl/, viewing several projects modeled in GC. The facility's scale, state-of-the-art machine tools, and resultant project work were quite impressive, to say the least! We were also treated to a presentation of Andres' work in parametric masonry, including the paper he delivered at the Structural Masonry Symposium in Turkey. Bentley continues to explore additional unique opportunities for collaboration among our ARG colleagues, academic researchers and commercial users.

Having progressed from basic terminology, through problem solving, to scripting and coding, the GC workshop wrapped up after 6pm Saturday evening. The vast majority of students participated right to the end, and were excited to continue exploring GC capabilities in upcoming coursework. We look forward to the Showcase event, later this spring, when the Georgia Tech Architecture community and Atlanta practitioners come together to view the excellent project work completed by students using GC. Stay current with upcoming GC events here: Student Showcase Calendar.
