What the Web Won't Do for you

Okay, we are all aware of the benefits of using ProjectWise Web Parts to collaborate either through SharePoint or simply in ASPNet. ProjectWise web access has improved greatly over the years and boasts some great features for those users that need to view, edit, check-in/out, create, move, delete, export, free and view thumbnails of documents via the web. You can also create, modify and delete folders. However, it is important to note that it is not a replacement for the PW thick client. It just doesn't have the same functionality or speed as the ProjectWise thick client.

I have been asked in the past for a document that lists the ProjectWise commands that are not featured through Web Parts. Well here is a list of options that are currently not available via the web server. In true blogger fashion, I welcome our users to add to this list:

  • In the past, Projectwise W8i WEB can easily open DGN files WITH REFERENCE. Just double clic on master DGN, and Plugin Projectwise download if needed all nécessary reference files.

New version of PW CONNECT have lost this important function.

Projectwise CONNECT is a Mix of Projectwise WEB CONNECT and Projectwise Drive... both of them store downloaded file in diferents "workspace"... it's like if developpers of PW WEB CONNECT and WEB Drive have not worked in the same development teams...

it would not have been very complicated to keep same folder structure than dms PW folder in client local vault. in this way, no problem to open a dgn file with reference. just change PW_WORKDIR in mslocal.cfg...

Excuse of "Use PW Client instead of PW WEB is just "not an excuse"...

Bentley have increase x 4 price of PW Client... and says, for light users, use PW WEB, it's cheaper...  but PW WEB CONNECT lost DGN with reference function... very usefull when you work with external sub contractor.

Not very happy of Bentley commercial stratégy...

  • Ability to create New Version as well as Assign Document Code have been introduced with PW Web Server V8i (SELECTseries 1) release.

  • From the readme file users should also be aware of the following Reference file limitation:

While you can check out and edit documents from Web Parts, ProjectWise Explorer is still the recommended ProjectWise client application for performing major document operations, as it supports integration with the editing application, and is better suited for working with master DGN and DWG documents that have references.

One example of why you should used ProjectWise Explorer for working with master documents: If you check out and open a master DGN document from Web Parts, the references only display in MicroStation if they happen to be stored in the same ProjectWise folder as the master document.

  • The PW Web Parts client does not offer desktop application integration (which Explorer client does via iDesktop Integration), as such for MicroStation or AutoCAD users there are no title block attribute exchange or reference file attachment capabilities.

  • I've also noticed that flat set are not available in V8i Web Parts, also there is no explicit command to create New Version
