Hypermodeling

A Hypermodel infuses the project’s documentation into the 3D model, automatically.

  • The 3D model is infused on demand, automatically and comprehensively, with the clarifying remarks and graphics of the project’s documentation, the very documentation with which the project team has exerted itself clarifying the project.

This invention makes the medium of drawing (construction documentation) better than it has been before, and also makes the medium of modeling better than it has been (ever) before.

  • Hypermodeling improves 2D Drawings because the drawings are contextualized in the model that gives them meaning, so they are easier and faster understood, more thoroughly, with less opportunity for misunderstanding and misinterpretation.

  • Hypermodeling improves 3D Models because models are now clear and unambiguous regarding a very essential differentiation (which was absent prior to Bentley's hypermodeling innovation) - the difference between locations in the model that are reliable and complete (enough), and all other locations that are not (or may not be) complete (enough). With this distinction now clear, therefore, models may be delivered with confidence, with authority, with reliability.

  •
    • The combination of a project's documentation IN the 3D model produces a new medium of communication, rich in potential, more effective than either drawings or models alone, that carries at once the reliability and clarity of a stack of construction documents (note that such documents, when issued for construction, contain no unauthorized statements, due specifically to the simple fact that a team is able to limit the number of statements - by excluding drawings (which represent locations) from the stack of documents, and including in the set of documents only the finite set of drawings (representing a finite set of locations), called out, selected for inclusion, and issued for construction.  These very locations from the document set now are automatically called out in the 3D model, allowing each document drawing to be expressed in-place, in context, on demand, in the 3D model, thereby very clearly expressing the difference in 3D between claimed and unclaimed locations, providing both that clarity, together with the clarity of what was said (documented) about a location, in the 3D model.

  •
    • The Hypermodel innovation spans all project phases, from early design sketches, inclusive even of hand sketches, through development to delivery, through construction and into operations and maintenance and likewise spans all infrastructure asset domains from buildings to power plants, to utility networks, to road and rail applications, GIS, and others.. Structural Steel is an interesting study and partial exception.

  •
    • Hypermodels are to 2D documents and 3D models what modern cinema is to recorded sound and moving picture. That is to say, the technical innovation 100 years ago that synchronized recorded sound into silent film elevated both sound and picture (contextualized and clarified, respectively) and created a third (new) medium (sound film) of greater, richer, more effective communicative potential than either of the former media (sound or picture) alone. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_film    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_film

3D models infused by construction documentation will have substantial positive effect on Architecture, Engineering, and Construction in several industries (Building, Plant, Civil, Utilities, Geospatial) both for individual projects, and for assemblages of many projects in campuses and cities.

Applicability extends beyond these industries though too, into every place that people want to see and understand – things, in the design professions, and in science, for example.

We deliver this fusion automatically with zero user effort or time required to produce it. If Dynamic Views tools are used to create drawings/views (documents) from 3D models, using callout tools, then the rest is automatic. And we’ve done this in a way that takes full advantage of the ability to directly reference multiple file formats into the composite 3D.  Make a change in Rhino, for example, and see the geometry updated automatically in the documents, and of course also in 3D infused by the documents.

The idea was motivated by my own use for 10 years of 3D modeling tools that are designed to automate the creation of conventional documentation graphics from 3D models – I concluded that this aims far too low, accomplishes far too little, and I decided to do something about it.

These features become part of a number of Bentley software products in the V8i SELECT Series 3 timeframe, Q4 2011.

Another benefit – Hypermodeling gives teams the freedom to decide, with clarity, and individually at each callout – How to complete the necessary graphics, using a combination of sheet graphics embellishments, and 3D element articulations. Since these will now be fully and mutually combined – the choice of how much to put into each bucket (2D or 3D) at each location is clear; any decision along such a drawing<>model gradient is likely to be valid.

Some feedback:

  • Awesome!!!

  • “We will use it immediately when released”

    • "now THIS excites me..I want us to be doing this.."

    • “I’m not even sure how to put it in words.. to be able to see everything together – that is what we need – wow”

    • From a construction firm: Hypermodeling is so obviously correct - that the industry needs this, in every discipline - it is astonishing it hasn’t been done before, and “why didn’t I think of that?”

    • An Architect said, “I love it!!!”

An early access program is currently available providing access to beta software now, targeted for commercial release in 2011.  Please e-mail me at rob.snyder@bentley.com if you would like to participate in the early access program.

    • I add that all of this (live documentation and live Model Documentation) works even when your project model is comprised of a hybrid of live linked models from all of these formats:

      DGN

      Real DWG

      3DS

      SHP (ESRI)

      MIF/MID

      TAB

      FBX

      IFC

      OBJ

      3DM (Rhino)

      SKP (Sketchup)

Plus, plug-in connections to many more formats..

When using Bentley V8i SELECTseries3 design, review, construction, and operation applications, Model Documentation infuses the project’s documentation into the 3D model, automatically.

How is this different from Navisworks, or Solibri? Bentley have a habit of making earth shattering announcements that turn out to be hollow marketing of functionality already available in other products.

    • Ant: Building Information Models without drawing documents IN them are speechless and ambiguous like movies without sound. In other words, prior to Bentley Hypermodeling, BIM is like silent film.

    • No other product anywhere automatically and comprehensively displays construction document drawings IN 3D models.

    • You should identify yourself, Ant. Particularly when issuing challenges.
