Technical Seminar on Green Engineering LifeCycle

By Mr. Alan Li

A technical seminar jointly organized by the Information Technology Division, Associate Members Committee and Electronics Division was held on 23 May 2008. Two speakers, Mr. Jimmy LAU and Mr. Paul YUE, technical consultant from Bentley Systems Hong Kong Ltd., gave the talks on the Green Engineering LifeCycle and how latest software technology can help with the process.

"Green Engineering" is similar to "Green Building" that defines as the practice of increasing the efficiency, human health and environment through better sitting, design, construction, operation, maintenance and removal with lifecycle. Green engineering has components of society, environment and profession.

Green Engineering Lifecycle could be applied by the software. The software of MicroStation and ProjectWise can provide an engineering platform and portal for design, build and operation. The software could widely apply to civil engineering, building engineering, geospatial engineering, plant engineering etc.. It could provide a 3D model and animation with different shape of aesthetic finishes for analysis. The software could be interoperable, powerful and accessible with provision of new and simple interface, head-up design, photorealistic visualization and animation, and graphics engine. The software could also be used for engineering analysis such as geometry design, define axis, 4D structural analysis, linear and non-linear computational design, and energy saving analysis including lighting, ventilation, solar and acoustic. Some green engineering examples such as London City Hall, Hong Kong Airport, Beijing Airport No. 4 Terminal, and National Aquatics Centre were applied by this software for engineering purpose. Animated video demonstrations were shown in the presentations to raise audiences' attention. The software could also be applied for information and content management, facility management, space management and integration with construction & maintenance system as an entire engineering life cycle.

The seminar ended with the question-and-answer session and the members were active to raise many questions for discussion. Finally, on behalf of the AMC, ITD & END and all participants, would like to thank Mr. Jimmy Lau and Mr. Paul Yue for providing the latest software technology in engineering projects which were informative and inspiration.
