Social Media "Shell"

When we join any online community, first step what we do is we search all our friends in the similar space..Then we search our friends/ colleagues with whom we have lost touch..Then we go in joining our school, college, previous organisation alumni group..We might go on in joining groups/forums which interests us..Like food, news etc..This is what we do when we venture ourselves in Social Media Space..

And then there is a small lull in the linkage process...We marketing folks keep on striving how not to stop the nuclear chain reaction !!!

The percentage of 3rd and 4rth contact connection is pretty less and it decreases further as we progress towards 5th ,6th and so on..Some ways to keep the chain reaction going on is what facebook does:displaying all the updates and actions done by a particular user and if it interests other user, he also participates in the same..This is called viral effect wherein the user shouldnt feel he is being forced but we need to tempt him..

So urge is to come out of your own defined Shell and venture in endless world of online community..Try,learn and unlearn..Thats what I keep on doing....

  • Hey Rob...Thanks for your insight..Tho we keep on defining Social Media in social context, however there is lot more "Science"involved in that..You can catch info on that on my future posts...

  • This is a great Topic!

One of my recent interests... 'Network Theory'

It's a pretty new area of science which touches oon a huge range of areas from natures networks to organisational networks... to cultural diversities, evolution and animal behaviour.

For example from the sound of crickets in long grass to social networks like MySpace and DIGG where people join, learn and evolve their profiles and interactions...

Have a read up on it at the WiKi: netwiki.amath.unc.edu
