very interesting topic!
Since years we are looking for a solution which allow us to simulate our stadium/bridge project with 'birds eye'. Unfortunately without success!

there is a solution from Fologram (based on Microsoft Hololens) which works fine for us, but the head mounted display is limited on the site, meaning we can't go up to +30m or 'flying' through a river to observing the future project we are processing.

When you said: 'aligned the resulting mesh with a BIM model of our building' to get the calculated positions & orientations of each frame.

I am curiously with what software you deal with position calculation and alignment?

I really liked your article. It reminds me of a 2013 roundabout project I worked on and submitted to the BE awards that year. I used Syntheyes to motion track and stabilize a video we shot from a helicopter. SynthEyes calculated the camera positions for the video and exported a MicroStation script file (.msa). I then imported this script into our MicroStation model of the roundabout and produced an animation that contrasts the existing intersection with the proposed roundabout by transition between the two. It really highlighted some of the benefits of roundabouts over traditional signalized intersections.

Below are links to the BE Inspired project and the animation.

Actually the first part of the video is a simulation - it would have actually cost us a flight to Kentucky just to show that guy with the helmet at the right location with respect to the rest of the video. So we decided to simulate it. It does not change anything about the augmentation part, though.

Great article. In my experience the construction industry (certainly in the UK) is slow to take up new technologies but once it does it becomes the norm very quickly. We have developed our own AR app for designers and architects to show their customers their designs in the actual environment in real time - please have a look here www.pinnaclevl.com/eyesee.htm

Our engineers will be able to access all types of information and experiences anywhere, anytime. We have been able to apply it to projects of various disciplines, from communicating lighting design concepts to traffic and pedestrian simulations. Traditionally, this has been visualized using renderings, animations, etc. The future is what you showed here on your demonstration! Can you see OSHA AR safety glasses in the near future?

I’ve seen tools that integrate visual simultaneous localization and mapping. Having a system that engaged could nail down that tracking and occlusion issue you see in your video. There’s a bright big beautiful tomorrow!
