I just want to get a little more info out there on how the effect of certain settings of your references can effect what you see. Some of the wording or descriptions may not be clear as to what will happen when these settings are used.
What I am getting to is the Reference Attachments Settings dialog:
In particular the "display overrides" option.
The KEY word here is DISPLAY and not overrides - as "overrides" has nothing to do with any of the ByLevel or Overrides symbology in the level manager.
The word override refers to the ability to make a change to the reference display and have the display different than that of the attached file. If I am allowed to override the settings, than I am allowed to make a change to the settings.
The Display Override setting controls display settings of NESTED references that are attached through this attachment and not the directly attached reference itself.
The Display Overrides options are going to control the reference display (on/off), locate (on/off), snap (on/off), and raster reference display (on/off) nothing more and it is all or nothing.
You can see that there are three options (Allow, Always, and Never).
By default we set this to "allow".
So lets go thru these options.
First lets get the file naming out of the way.
My main file is going to be called "MASTER" file and its reference file will be called "REFERENCE" and the references' attached reference file is going to be called NESTED. So I have a file called NESTED attached to a file called REFERENCE, which is attached to a file called MASTER.
MASTER>REFERENCE>NESTED
Now - lets try to explain the options:
NEVER - meaning no matter what display settings for the Nested reference get changed in the MASTER file, the settings will NEVER get saved in the file. So the nested reference settings will NEVER be OVERRIDEN. When the file is reloaded (closed and reopened ) , the display settings saved in the Reference file will be used for displaying the Nested file. The Master file will reflect how the Nested file is displayed in the REFERENCE file (meaning - I would see the same settings as if I opened the REFERENCE file actively). Also meaning that any changes I would like to see for the display of the Nested file, need to be done in the REFERENCE file. These changes to the Nested file will carry through to the Master file.
ALWAYS - meaning whatever was set in the MASTER file will hold. The OVERRIDES or changes to the DISPLAY of the Nested reference are ALWAYS kept. Once the REFERENCE file is attached, the display settings of the Nested file are copied into the MASTER file. So if the REFERENCE file was opened actively and changes were made to the display settings of the Nested file, these changes will not be seen in the MASTER file. Both files contain their own set of display settings for the Nested file. Also any changes made to the display of the Nested file in the MASTER file will hold. Any changes that I would like to see need to be done in the MASTER file.
ALLOW - This will function as the NEVER option does, UNTIL a change is made to the display of the Nested file in the MASTER file, at which time it will then function as the ALWAYS option. Holding any changes made in the MASTER file from that point forward. So as long as no changes are made in the MASTER file , you will see any changes made in the REFERENCE file, BUT once you make a change in the MASTER file, these changes will hold and you will no longer see the changes made in the REFERENCE file (this functionality is similar to how it worked in previous versions and why we default to this).
Remember that Display Overrides refers to the ability to Override (change) the Display (reference display, reference locate, reference snap, and raster reference display) of the Nested reference files that are attached through this reference attachment.
Nested files within nested files within nested files (as are common with ORD) will inherit settings. For example: If a sheet references a default model that references a profile model that references an alignment drawing's profile model; and the default model turns the construction class attribute off for the profile model that it references, all construction class elements will not be visible regardless of what settings are in the nested files below it.

Tim. Do you know they keyin to control this setting. I have a pull down menu to attached titleblocks and this would add more power to the command sequence I have.
